My paper task disc expires on 30th Sept and I want to pay tax monthly - Is there any reason why I can't wait until the morning of the 1st to log on with my reminder notice and set up a direct debit as per the new process?

So this means that if my tax expires on 30th October, I can pay monthly effective from 00:01 the next morning?

So what your saying is for October ,you have to buy 6/12 months in one hit ,correct me if I'm wrong.

That would still be October.

And then join in with the DD payments 6/12 months later than everyone else

I assume that when you get your renewal notice in October and go online to pay there will be a monthly option which there isn't currently.

That's fine then as that's when mine is up ,as it's just shy of 500 /year I'd rather pay monthly

I wonder how easy it will be to cancel the DD and sorn the car after one or two months.

I quite fancy using more of my cars, but for less time each.biggrin

Presumably it's just the licencing part of the VED system that keeps it in existence, i.e. that it forces people to register the car to themselves in order to get the ticket for 6/12 months, otherwise they'd have no motivation to do so and a huge number of cars would still be reg'd to the last owner, if that makes sense?

Otherwise it'd make so much more sense just to put 5p/litre on fuel, surely?

You can send a written notice to your bank cancelling a DD any time you want to. When they receive it the DD should be flagged accordingly. Any subsequent BACS submission by DVLA will be rejected and an ADDACS notice generated. SORN can be done online. So, in theory, there should be no issues. Starting the DD up again might be fun though. That said, it's a totally new and unproven system atm. I have no intention of being a test mule!

Also, knowing the ability of the DVLA to screw anything up given half a chance and their attitude that they never make mistakes, there is NO way I'm giving the DVLA free access to my bank account. I don't change my cars that often, so I'll carry on taxing them as hitherto.
