You use it every single time you accelerate... it's not all about top speed smile

Must admit I tend to cruise down the motorways, I find it more enjoyable to have fun on the A/B roads, plus the fuzz are on motorways in unmarked cars that I can't keep track on, and plus plus soooo many dheads on m/ways!

Oh, and I drive a 600bhp vxr8

Because as mentioned by other posters, driving on a motorway is about as much fun as having a rash on your ballbag, regardless of whether you're doing 60mph or 160mph. There are much better places to enjoy driving.
That's in your opinion. I've driven at those speeds and found 160 more thrilling than driving at 60.

I very rarely give it beans on the motorway, there just seems no challenge really. Generally set cruise around 77 and relax. Until of course you get into a tangle with a muppet who is unable to regulate their speed and who overtakes you, you overtake them etc, ad infinitum....

In these situations a brief but firm right foot followed by a resumption of cursing does the trick.

Would those that cruise at nsl go hell for leather on autobahns? There are curves and they become increasingly challenging and fun at 140+

Also, where do you guys blat away from motorways? I find unless you live in the remoter parts of the UK you get stuck behind the world and his wife doing 45 - 50 everywhere or slow moving lorries, caravans etc

You're not wrong. Inability to manage speed is probably one of my greatest pet hates on the roads- I can happily get through most motorway journeys and indeed across town with very infrequent braking other than for the muppets who can't understand acceleration sense diving into my gaps!

I generally slip stream a lorry or something on the way to work. Sure it's probably a waste of engine but I'm Not in a rush, I get there chilled out and get a heap more mpg.

When it's home times, I drive more 'quickly' as I want dinner!

Buddy of mine has an F10 M5, very rarely gives it the boot. Just enjoys the car!

I know people with a similar outlook. Personally, I can't understand it. How much enjoyment is to be gained from owning something? Or from having people see you driving something? A 'lesser' 5-Series would possibly be a more pleasant car to travel in.

I'd prefer something lesser that I could make more use of, as I enjoy driving and riding.

ps. I can't sensibly afford an M5 anyway wink

I think he meant that you can use the full potential of an engine capable of producing 500bhp at 7750rpm every time you accelerate, rather than actually doing 7750rpm at full throttle and getting 500bhp, which presumably is a near license losing speed in all but 1st gear!

The speed and style of my motorway driving will depend largely on:

What car I'm in;
Where I'm going;
What the time is.

More often than not I am doing 60-70mph listening to radio 4 - but if its quiet and I am in the right mood I might go a "little" but faster. I am amazed how many people do the default 90mph a few feet from the car in front, then leave the motorway and can barely keep to the NSL on single carriageways! Sums up the driving standards of today!!

I rarely use full throttle on the GTR on the road. Not many places to use it all. (630bhp/600lb-ft). Still, its going in for a built engine soon for ~ 850bhp/800lb-ft), so probably even more pointless to have so much power...but nice to have.

I too spend most of my time doing 70mph as the stress of going any faster and risking arrest spoils the mood. I also prefer to cruise with the window down listening to the V8!

Do you use it on track?

When you have a nice car and you are on the motorway you get at least one person who thinks they can have a go.

"I may have 300bhp less but my God given Schumacher skills will more than compensate"

They then proceed to crawl up your bumper and dont even politely flash for you to move to the middle lane.

Cue the 'challenge accepted' mentality, drop it to third gear, foot down and you are doing 100mph (my speedo isnt working, honest officer!) and within a few seconds Mr GTi, Leon FR, 335D or 911 Carrera become a teeny spec in the rear view mirror.

I then move to middle lane and carry on at 70mph much to their "my turbo was just about to kick in, yo!....you p*ssy!!!!" Annoyance.

You then realise those 10 seconds have ruines your average fuel economy and you crawl to 55mph again to get the figure back up again biggrin

Maybe these people are just wanting to go faster and aggressively trying to push you out of the way, rather than caring if you're car is quicker.

I came up behind a scirocco doing 40mph up a slip road the other day but when I went to overtake him he swung out in front of me and put his foot down. He clearly felt I was trying to race him but actually I just wanted to get going as we were merging with 70mph traffic. I couldn't give a crap that his slow diesel was fractionally quicker than my slow diesel, I just wanted him to get moving.

Well like I say, it doesn't reflect on your enthusiasm for driving. I don't think you could question my petrol head credentials but I don't see the point in going fast in straight lines.
I always do 70 too, and my theory is the same. It's boring at any speed, doing 80 doesn't save much time, and I'll likely lose any time I make anyway; so I might as well do it at 70mph to save some money. Then have more fun on fun roads.
