I'd be checking on Trip Advisor or even email them to get an idea of drinks prices etc. As it's a 3/3.5 star they may not be too bad. How much more would AI be? If you like a drink would recommend this.

The place we stayed it was ridiculously expensive- £7 for a beer and as a result no one was to be found in the bars in the evening and there was no atmosphere.

TBH I really didn't rate Mauritius. We had a car and on going out to explore found when you scratched the surface the place is a bit of a st hole and has a huge problem with stay dogs-the former possibly being true of many of these sorts of tropical destinations. For similar money the Maldives is head and shoulders above for a luxury beach holiday IMO-granted theirs more going on in Mauritius if you want more than sun bathing and diving. We did a cheapie beach holiday to Mexico last October and was bloody good value <1k each for 11 nights proper All Inclusive.

Just to offer some balance my brother went for his honeymoon and loved it-although they didn't stay too far from their accommodation.

I thought the Maldives was mainly couples driven and with huts on stilts

That really isn't a nice or typical part of the island it's package deal paradise and is not representative of What Mauritius has to offer, it really isn't a place that can be done on the cheap.

I would aim for the south west corner . The south east coastline has the very best hotels, but at a serious price.

Yes it's popular with couples and honeymooners, but you can tend to pick an island that best suits your needs. Really small ones for that cast away feel or the larger ones that offer more in the way of activities, water sports, variety of restaurants-one has a 9 hole golf course.
