I know that this is more of a first world issue, and there will be people who will be working these days because they're a Doctor or a Nurse, work off shore etc, but I am not, I work in IT.

Would you feel unfairly treated if you had to work those 3 days as you're rota'd on for those days?

Surely it depends on the rota up to that point.

If it's exactly the same pattern as it has been for the x number of months preceding it then no. If, however, changes have been made to the regular pattern then yes.

The only place I've ever worked where it was an issue, if you worked one unfavourable day, you didn't have to do the next one i.e. those who worked xmas eve didn't have to work new year's eve and vice versa.

This is part of the issue. I've been working for this company for 6 weeks and the rota has changed 3 times. There is also no real pattern to the rota moving forward.

I don't mind working Christmas Day and Boxing day, or New Years Eve and New Years day, but not both.

I'd certainly be fed up with working both Christmas Day and New Years Day, let alone Boxing Day as well.

What's the compensation for it?

I worked part of one Christmas Day for treble time, which was OK.

Actually, I was only on call.
Didn't get called.
There were 6 of us, so we split it up into 4 hour segments.
4 hours at treble time was 12 hours pay, quite nice.
They actually screwed up and paid me 12 hours at treble time, 36 hours pay, very nice Christmas bonus.
Especially as I slept through the segment I was on call for....

Boom. There's your answer. You're the new boy.

If I were in your situation I'd be having a word with the relevant person.

Working all three of those days is taking the piss, new boy or not.

Im not totally the new boy. I have moved department. I have been with the company for nearly 2 years. Recently had another member of staff join the department after me as well. In terms of the longest working members of staff, I am the 3rd longest out of 6.

In terms of compensation? I'm a shift worker, so get shift allowance. Bank Holidays and weekends dont exist in my world.

That's a bit st. And I don't agree with Centurion, at all. Allowances should be made where a rota covers three such holidays in quick succession. Unless Centurion would truly be happy should his rota just so happen to cover Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day every year. Because, you know, that's the rota, Doubt it.

All that said, I would definitely be pissed if I was expected to work possibly the three worst days of the year to be working.

I'm unhappy about it and a call is coming my way from my manager on Monday. I have no problem working one or the other, but not both.

I'm back at work tomorrow doing them a favour because of short staff issues. I'll be spending my day applying for a new job.

Missed this earlier somehow.

OP asked if you would feel unfairly treated in that situation. As I mentioned, if that was a long standing rota that had been organised a long time previously, then no, that's not unfair per se. It sucks yes, but it's not unfair. It's not like it's suddenly been changed and he's been singled out to work those days.

Since the OP then mentioned all the other factors such as length of service, rota constantly changing etc, then yes, that is unfair.

What does it say in your contract? is there anything that covers this topic?

The argument about whether things are "fair" or not is usually settled by reading the contract. Most of them have provision for stuff like this.

Like you say, there's plenty of people who work these rotations regularly (every second year). Why not work them, surely you'll have them off next year? Things like this tickle me.

Yes but they go into that role knowing this. IN the same way I know that I have to work Sunday to prepare for Mondays quite often. I chose that. However, I most certainly would not work Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

SWMBO is working boxing day this year, gets let off xmas eve and day as she worked them the year before. She wants to try and catch a shift on those nights however as the pay is 3x normal.

I'm working over christmas, apart from the bank holidays. Have had the last few years off all week, so felt it was my turn to work, quite looking forward to a few days of quiet easy work, with some internet thrown in and an early finish which we always get!

Easier to work too, saves buggaring child care about which is already pre-arranged.

I worked these 3 days last year and the year before that

Joy of joys, I'm working them this year as well.

I've kind of forgotten what Christmas is all about!

Railway.

Have worked them plenty of times in the past. Landed well this year, finish Christmas eve, back on NYD night shift.

TBH, despite the woe is me winging I did from about March I quite liked working them. Plenty of extra coin £££.
