I am looking at moving on from my E39 5 series touring, to something larger, with better boot space, and now considering something faster too. My thoughts have been turned to M5 BMW E60, which looks like it will have the same running costs as my Porsche 996 Turbo, I have now been looking at the C63 AMG! Love the look of the estate and they are huge, van sized interiors, which is what I am after for transporting my art work etc, only thing, will they have the same massive running costs as the porsche? Looking at spending around 20k.

any opinions?

thanks

At the 20k price mark you will be buying right at the bottom of the market. I keep an eye on the market to gauge where mine's at. There are some saloons at that price point but they invariably have higher than average miles or some sort of accident history, I've not yet seen any estates quite that low.

In it's defence however, they fair very well from an overall borkage risk factor and servicing is reasonably priced from my local Mercedes dealer - a recent major service and gearbox oil change (happens once at 35k odd miles) cost me in the region of 600 quid, a fair proportion of which was the gearbox.

Also they are very easy to make louder and with a £500 pound remap you can add a significant amount of HP.

Personally if it were me I'd be looking at a sorted M5, although I appreciate that they have a higher running cost associated.

Edited to add - Dan I bought some of your work a few weeks back. small world!

E's are huge, C's less so. A 5 series Tourer should be bigger than a C Class Wagon, which is a 3 series comparator.

The C is okay size wise but nothing special. Fold flat seats gets you a 5.5ft bed thats reasonable squarish but none too tall. Buy a boot liner and do the thing and lay lots of card on the boot as I don't think the load area is "industrial" to carry stuff that's not soft.

Is mid teens fuel an issue?

Agree above that a C-class is not exactly a load lugger per se.

From a cost perspective, if you drive it rewardingly then expect mid teen fuel consumption and tyres in less than 10,000 miles. I tend to do longer journeys in mine and am getting a happy 20.8 mpg and the tyres show very little wear, maybe I should try harder :-)

Having a B service today, the major sevice, every other year or every 20k miles at a fixed price of £1,090. But I've elected to do their service plan at £90 a month (£1080 pa) and for that I get my A service next year/10,000 miles as well.

Uses very little oil either. Oh and if you hadn't worked it out from all the other posts on this forum, it's potentially the greatest car you wil ever drive, a true Jekyll and Hyde. Good luck, Tom
