audi a8 multitronic 3.0 petrol
Discussion
I actually quite like them, smooth refined engine & drivechain, FWD so don't expect q type grip but fine for cruising.
Should be cheap most, people go for the 3.0TDI q, not so many of these ordered new.
The only downside is the multitroinc box, known reliability issues. Otherwise fine check all the electrics MMI etc are okay.

The type of gearbox fitted
its constantly variable, rather than a proper automatic with actual gears.
In my opinion, they are crap. Its not a real A8 if its got one.

ETA
Some of my customers love them, the drive is smooth as there are never any gear changes, in the 28 odd pages of that thread there are several accounts from people who enjoy the gearbox and have had no problems.
But IMHO Its bad enough in a 1,9TDI A4 in an A8 is just wrong.

Something like this for me, please:

Find something with decent history and (preferably) a reasonably recent belt service.
They're well nailed together and there's no reason a 5k A8 can't give many more years of service.

I had no idea they were at that money now. An unbelievable amount of car for the money.http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...

As above, all quattro models have a proper 6 speed zf auto - nice box and far more reliable than the multitronic
Given the weight of the car I suspect the real world difference between a 3.0 petrol multitronic vs 4.2 tiptronic is negligable - 4.2 might be slightly worse in town but on a run I doubt there's anything in it. Am sure Dr G will confirm later

Probably the wrong forum to ask in, but from my limited knowledge I'd expect the A8 to be a lot less rusty and less bork-prone through design than the Merc. '8 is the sportier steer, but spec sensitive in terms of SE vs Sport, seat type (there are at least 3 different options IIRC)
On the '8 you're basically looking at potential air suspension faults, which if they're dealt with early enough can usually be dealt with via a compressor rebuild kit that someone makes - there's details around on here for it. There's also software related issues which sometimes appear if modules play up, or fibre wiring becomes disconnected - these are usually due to fiddling rather than failure! Sometimes the screen will fail to pop up, but there's a repair kit for that.
Aside from cambelts (every 5 years) running costs aren't too horrific as most parts are shared with other VAG cars. If it's on big wheels (20s are a fairly popular option) then obviously decent tyres will cost.
On the upside 3 adults seated across the back in reasonable comfort is entirely feasible
ETA - there's an excellent forum for A8s at http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/ which will give you a flavour of common issues and guidance on spec and cars for sale
