I have a 1988 audi quattro ur turbo MB and it is turning over but not starting. It does start eventually but I fear soon it won't start at all. I may have run it fairly low on fuel recently. I thought it was empty and that's why it wasn't starting but on filling it the issue is still there.
Does anyone have advice on some simple checks/problem solving.

Those are simple old lumps, start with the basics of fuel and spark.

If you have a nice fat spark at the plug, check the plugs look good and are fairly clean, and they may not be if you've been trying to get it started. If not, clean them up, and heat them up a bit. The average grill is quite handy for this.

Try a squirt of eezi-start stuff through the inlet. If it fires and runs as long as the eezi-start lasts, fuelling problem.

(I wonder if you've run it empty enough to drag a load of rubbish into the fuel filter?)

If you have run the tank low there might be dirt in the fuel filter situated under the offside between the front and rear wheel, easy job to change. Does it run ok once it is running or does it "lean out" at high revs? Check the water temp sensor (close to thermostat just down on right hand side of cam cover towards the front) and its connections are all clean and bright, it has 3 or 4 connectors and normally has a rubber cover over the sensor this sometimes fills with water and corrodes. Let us know how you get on.

Does it start better if you pump the throttle? Fuel accumulator can fail causing slow/reluctant starting (takes ages to build pressure).

It could be loads of things. Apart from the things already mentioned it could be cold start injector, idle stabilisation valve, warm-up regulator for starters (or non-starters). All sorts. Fellow MB owner here and with respect to the chap above these are not "simple old lumps", they're rather complicated and certainly idiosyncratic. The MB is the rarest urQuattro and has a unique engine management system (albeit one that uses quite a few common principles and components) in which any or all components could now be about 25 years old or more. Check out Phil Payne's Quattro pages at www.isham-research.co.uk., then you could try quattroforum.com.

Good luck!

Quite, the 'K' in K-Jet stands for 'voodoo'.

The quattro hasn't moved for a few days now but the same evening that it took an absolute age to start in the morning(it's garaged so not a cold weather thing)it started instantly.
I am guessing this may point to something related to it sitting for a period of time.(it tends to only move once a week max).
Maybe it just needs a good long run or that may be my lack of car knowledge speaking.
I haven't had a chance to look into the suggestions yet but should get to it over the weekend.
