Just about to pick up a 63 plate from a main dealer and didn't realise that MB no longer had service books with stamps etc.

All available via the dealer computer system apparently

When did this change and how are you meant to quickly check a vehicles history when looking at used ones?

(yes I know the old way can be faked and doesn't give much detail but it was a useful starting point)

Or is the dealer just having me on?

Rgds

Its been like this for the past 4 or 5 years IIRC, digital service history only. Audi is the same now.

It is true. Ask dealer for a print out.

I spoke to Mercedes only yesterday about this. They no longer have books but a digital record as mentioned above. If you would like to still have a book and it isn't a bad idea, they will sell frown you one and they will then stamp it for you for free when you have it serviced smile.

They also mentioned that if you mention it when you book it in, you can request a complete service record for the vehicle and they will print it out for you for when you collect the car. Useful service as a prospective buyer is going to want to see some evidence of servicing and invoices (assuming they don't list catastrophic repairs!) will only help your sale.

It's not that big a problem to just retain the invoices for each service and pass them on when the vehicle is sold, is it? I have just traded our Z4 for an SLK and see that the normal book isn't there with the MB.

On sale, I noticed that the Z4 hadn't got its first service stamped in the book but I included in the book all of the service invoices.
