I just thort that i would make a thread on this to help anyone if they planned on doing this or if anyone is interested in this kind of thing, first of all heres my now current car, its a fiesta freestyle 2001 mk5, i bought this car of a friend at work for £400 back in august 2013, just to learn and find my way into mechanics as im currently working as a electrical/mechanical apprentice engineer and im 20 and really wanted a car to work on in my free time, but never had any experience, or anyone i knew wanted to help or were also interested in this, i also have a garage with a pit to help wink didnt want it to go to waste.i then rebuilt it all with new rings, and everything else so here are some of my pictures of the re-build, let me know if you have any questions at all! P.S after this rebuild and it went so well i had two other people ask to help/do there engines for them as well.

here is the car when first purchased

The inlet was the first thing to come off

picture of one inlet

found out how dirty this was

rocker cover off

removed right side wheel and removed arch liner, jacked up engine so could remove engine mount so i could take timing belt covers off

tried to remove crankshaft pulley bolt to remove timing belt covers! hardest bolt ever to get out! tried everything on the THING!

finally got it out, had to buy a impact gun

removed water pump then all timing covers, belt and crankshaft pulleys.

head removed

new set of rings smile

really clean set of pistons to say cars done 140000 miles!

inside of bores, could still see honing marks!

before cleaning of head and block

after cleaning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

new head gasket in place ready for rebuilding!

head back on cams on there way in

timing done, just inlet back on and aux belt back on!

all ready to drive, broke it in and changed oil.

after all this work this happened furious!!!!!!!!

This car had so much power after rebuild the clutch couldn't handle the power, now its on its 3rd clutch haha!!!!!

This is the car now going upon 145000 miles still drives perfect, got the alloys of a friend at work for £40! plus spare and all good tires!!!!

Thanks for viewing my thread!

Liked the pics. Interesting that for the mileage it didn't appear too choked-up; or even worn with honing marks still on the cylinders!

As for the crank bolt, they do tend to be tight - something around 100nm and then possible an angle tighten of about 90 degrees. And they're usually a stretch bolt which should be replaced with a new one.

A tip for tough to remove bolts
I have a blow torch with a propane butane mix and heat the bolt and let it cool, this usually helps a lot
