Right,

Im going back to PC gaming this weekend. I've seen loads of DayZ stuff and its half the reason im going to PC. firstly, standalone or dayz mod based on arma 2?

Im assuming standalone is better as its newer but ive heard different opinions.

Secondly I need tips for getting started. It seems ridiculously complicated, are the controls complicated? does it need hours of setting up before you play?

Is it just a case of dive in and run around like a noob but i'll get the hang of it? How do you find your way around, do you need to just find a map and compass and go from there?

Any hints/tips?

I guess as i'll be looking to get Arma 3 also they are controlled the same?

Any other games that are a must? I'll be getting CS:GO, BF4 I have on the Xbone so probably wont bother. Does day of defeat still exist? used to love that! Im going to try to get my old steam account going....

Standalone all the way yes the mod has more content like vehicles more guns etc but they're not developing that anymore the most recent 0.49 has been great one of the best yet.

No it's not really complicated I'd say it takes about 1-2hrs to get decently geared providing the server recently restarted.Maybe a week of play to get the hang of things fully.

http://dayzdb.com/map/chernarusplus Use this map to help you navigate it tells you where certain loot might to have it quick to hand just use alt+tab in steam and click web browser so you can easily refer to it.

I don't have many hints really I'd say most important rule is don't trust anyone.

You actually remind me of myself last year I started watching videos of the mod I was blown away so I decided I wanted to build a pc as a Christmas present for myself.

I actually took a break from pc gaming for a while due to space where I lived but now we have space and I have a pc again I don't think i'll ever go back to console smile even though I hear of dayz comming to ps4 eventually.

Thanks for that! Are the controls fairly easy to pick up? Frankie's videos got me back into it!

I just found my steam login details... Last logged I in 2009!!!

Still, now I found my details it means I have my old copies of Half life. Was hoping Day of Defeat would be upgraded but sadly not :-(

Standalone is better now - I think it's getting close to where the vanilla DayZ mod experience left off.

The set up was pretty straight forward, my graphics were pretty much spot on from install and the server selection is a lot easier than the old Mod/Commander/Six confusion.

Basic controls are picked up quickly and the more complicated commands are easily learned with practice. Make sure you have a headset and mic, being able to talk to the person shooting you might just save your life.

Currently have the standalone downloading. Don't have a headset unfortunately but will see how I get on to start with.

Just bought another turtle beach. Will be my third set, shame the Xbox one set I have won't work :-(

Another quick question. How do you go about playing with mates? Nobatron and I intend to team up but won't we spawn randomly and possibly end up hours from each other?

You'll need to download teamspeak.

Keep ingame chat to a minimum, others can hear you talking and it gives away your position.

By learning the map (you'll quickly get used to Elektro, Cherno, Berizino and other coastal towns) you can quickly meet up after a 20-30 minute run.

Does team speak work outside of the game? They wouldn't hear us in game chatting via team speak is what I'm getting at.

How do vehicles work btw? My understanding is that they spawn randomly all over the map but normally broken in some way. Needing a wheel, or a rotor assy etc.

You then need a toolkit, and scavenge the parts to fix?

I haven't played on the standalone for a while, i know a 2gb update is waiting though!

I played it when the standalone first came out so gave it a few months for them to sort the bugs out

You can't hear your teamspeak chat ingame, it runs alongside as a seperate program.

No idea how vehicles (if they even get released) will work in standalone but in the mod they would spawn in with various degrees of damage/lack of fuel. Usually, players would hoard vehicles and hide them away in the forests, where they stayed until either found and stolen or destroyed by blowing them up.

I used to love finding players camps. The map suddenly gets very small when your trying to hide a Ural.

third set? lol I had one when I had my 360 absolute garbage it broke after about a month theres plenty of choice for people on pc.

There aren't any vehicles in standalone yet but they're in internal testing I'm guessing they MIGHT be out by the end of the year.

Ah no way, no vehicles!?

Do the controls and gameplay work the same as arma 3?

I got a pc just for DAYZ standalone, played it a lot to start with but now I am lucky if I spend 2 hours a week on it. I am actually just gonna leave it for 6 - 8 months then jump back in. remember it is still a pre-alpha game which means alot of stuff is broken, and with every major update to introduce new content and fix the old stuff new stuff breaks. It's very annoying but I knew what I was signing up for.

I paid £20 for it which is really good value for money as I have put over 60 hours into it and still not seen a third of the map nor half the weapons. I just got as mosin with long range scope before the wipe last week. :-(

You not read the warnings rod warning you Not to buy as its far from finished? I have over 400hrs in standalone joined a clan etc I never thought I'd put that much time into this game its Paid for itself tenfold Its truely a unique experience where you can lose everything in an instant.

While the feeling of comming across other players has died down abit It still gets the heart racing.

Zeds getting stuck in the floor and walking through walls are part of the games charm. They've been doing that since the mod so it's carrying on with tradition imo.

Don't get me wrong, I know the game is an alpha. Just took me by surprise hehe

Had a good wander round one of the towns last night, found a couple spots with some ok starting loot, but couldn't pick up any jackets/trousers/bags etc for some reason. Meaning I could only carry a tiny amount. Then had a zombie slide through a closed door, mashed him with a stun baton then bled to death. Spawned again already being attacked & bleeding in the middle of nowhere. Spawned again and took shelter in the house in the above picture.

Tried punching that zombie to death when another one spawned in the room and killed me on the spot. Gonna take a while to adjust I think!

I'm a big fan of DayZ, and have been playing it since a few months after the mod first appeared, which must be around two years ago now IIRC.

The Standalone is a bit more polished than the mod, but is still very much in development, and updates seem to be coming slower and slower in recent months. Apparently they will be moving the game over to a new engine, which should be interesting. Its a buggy game though, and despite looking much better than the mod, its quite an empty experience IMO, with little to do beyond getting enough food and drink to easily support yourself. My friends and I have given up playing it at the moment, we're waiting for some serious updates to appear, such as vehicles, better weapon physics and just a bit more to do.

The mod has a lot more variety going for it, with people creating new maps, modes and content all the time. It has its own quirks and bugs, but I've had a lot of fun there, especially on the Epoch modes, I'm a sucker for base building and love doing this. Aircraft, helicopters and vehicles all add up to give the game more fun.

Personally, I'd say that if you want the full DayZ experience, play the mod, as it has everything that makes the game good there already. The Standalone isn't bad, but feels hollow, and well, you never know what lies ahead for it; it may become a fantastic game taking all the aspects of the mod into a better game, or it could just get dumped by the developers and not get much better than it already is. I don't think Standalone will become any better than what Vanilla DayZ was.
