Just bought an old fzr600 genesis, starts no problem, idles fine, goes like a train when warm but there's a little problem when driving it,sort of gets better when warmer.Best way to describe it is that chugging you get if you were to draw up to a near stand still in say third gear? The bike would lurch and you have to ofcourse dip the clutch to stop it stalling. It's that lurching i get when rolling off the throttle,it lurches way before it should,ie like you're going to slow for the gear you're in.Anyone any ideas? Its a 92 bike first reg in 96,25,000 miles.

I would suggest sticking it on your local dyno. Carbs, either worn out, set up for race system / air filter that it no longer has, or gummed up from being stood would be my first thought but there will be a million other permutations of air leaks, plugs, coils etc on a 22 year old bike. Does it start easily from cold with no choke?

A 1992 bike first registered in 1996? Whatever was it doing in those 4 years until the FZR600R came out? scratchchin

Never tried starting it from cold without choke,i just give it a tiny little bit of choke and have the throttle slightly turned and it fires right up.No idea about the 4 years, that's what it's got on the v5 so who am i to argue lol.

Not being silly but it isn't an import and first registered here in '96 is it? Seems odd that a 92 bike wouldn't get registered for 4 years and just be sat around.

I think they're auggesting it was raced for those 4 years, then only registered when the better model came out.

yes

fk all use putting it on a dyno, it's a basic running issue. Not something that needs expensive diagnostics.

Run a bottle of redex through it with the next tank of petrol, chances are it's just gummed up with old petrol & that'll clear it. Clean the plugs & check their gaps too.

Ive clened the carbs, balanced them and its still doing it?Im sure its a drive issue.Ive had loads of big mx bikes and ive had issues with clutch plates wearing notches in the basket, but cant remember symptoms being just lurching,it would usually be stalling going into first gear. When its lurching it definetly isnt the engine luching,it lurches like it wants to stall because you're in too high a gear for your speed? Can a clutch show symptoms like this?
Bike starts fine, idles perfectly, goes up and down the box no problem.I actually started to think it was the way i was driving it!!I've adjusted clutch all different ways, and throttle slack.Ive even started to dip the clutch slightly all the time like you have to do with big v-twins at lowish speeds around roundabouts etc but to no avail!

A misfire due to e.g. block jets or ropey ignition system (plugs, HT leads, coils) will cause this. A slight misfire will smooth out at high RPM and get much more noticeable at low RPM. Very unlikely to be a clutch problem.

How did you clean the carbs? It's quite possible for internal drillings to get gummed up if it's been left standing for a long time, and they can be inaccessible for manual cleaning. In that case ultrasonic cleaning might be the way forwards, assuming it's a fuel problem.

My gut instinct was the way it felt wasnt fuel related, more drive related, ends up my rear cush drive rubbers are knackered!!Grabbed a handful of sprocket and i can move it every way!Done a search and someone else had identical problem to what i was having and it led me to this.Just thought i'd post a reply incase someone else is having similar problem with an older bike.
