Afternoon Chaps,

Accutane, believe a few of you have used it. I had a big acne breakout on the back and shoulders that was unexpected and the dermologist I saw put me straight onto accutane to deal with it. Been running it for a month so far and other than dry lips its been working well.

Last few days however my face (Which has had no problems) is really suffering. Red blotches, small spots breaking out etc, plus it feels dry as hell and sore to touch. Is this normal? And if so whats recommended to deal with it. I'm due to see the derm again on the 10th but I'm starting to look a tad ridiculous at the moment especially as I had an issue that was not visible to all and sundry and now is very visible!

I'm currently on my second course.

Everything you have said is completely standard, it is normal for you to break out with more spots for the first 4-6 weeks I would say.
You need to use a moisturiser everyday religiously, the same with lip balm (i find carmex best). Some sort of SPF/Sunblock is also needed if you are outside for a period of time on even a half sunny day. Accutane thins your skin meaning it's very susceptible to burning which isn't a good look alongside acne.

What dose are you taking?

Funny you say that, my face feels like its constantly sunburned. Perhaps it is! The flakiness is really annoying me now though.

Dose is 40mg a day, I feel I'd prefer to drop it to 20mg.

Obviously I don't know the severity of your Acne or your weight (that's what they work out your dose from), but i'm 78kg and take 60mg a day and applying moisturiser every night before bed eliminates the flakiness for me, so I would definitely try that before lowering the dose.

Good luck!

I must be honest, isotretinoin (active ingredient of Accutane/Roaccutane) isn't something I'd want to go near to.

Absolutely horrible stuff. Made my skin bright red and gave me regular nosebleeds. It did completely clear up my acne though.

Has the redness cleared up? If so how long did it take. I'm having the same issue around my nose/cheeks at the moment

I was on it about 5 years ago. All of the negative symptoms didn't clear up until a week or so after I stopped taking it

Didn't realise they calculated the dosage on weight, I'm 65kg.

Moisteriser seems to be doing the trick, although I have a rash around the edges of my mouth that looks terrible. Meh, if it doesn't clear up soon I'll just live with the spots on the shoulders and back. (Quite how someone develops acne at 33 I have no idea)

Yeah i have that aswell, think it's called Angular Cheilitis. No cream that i've been told to use has stopped that and yeah it doesn't look to great.

Brilliant stuff, Roaccutane was the only thing that worked for me and transformed the situation. Quite happy to put up with a few side effects at the time for all the benefits it brought.

I assume you didn't suffer from suicidal thoughts/tendencies or the like?!
