Toluene in fuel raises the combustion temp and helps burn carbon off, that's probably why most fuel system cleaners smell of thinners i guess.

The claim with this snake oil is that it cleans carbon out of the fuel system, off the injectors and from the intake tract which is quite different from burning it off in the combustion chamber surfaces. Quite amusing to read their "how it works" page on the website which tells you nothing about how it works unsurprisingly.

Except for direct injected engines. Terraclean have yet to come up with an alternative to stripping the manifold off and walnut shell blasting the valves and ports.

i've also heard that on older, higher mileage cars it can be a double edged sword as the build-ups within the engine can quite happily and reliably hide all manner of sins which may then manifest themselves once uncovered.
