I'm going to America on friday, starting in San Fran. I've been told Sears is good for clothes.

I'd like some new gym stuff, what are the prices of Nike like compared to here? I can't log on to the Nike USA store to get an idea as I keep being redirected to the GB one.

Try Sports Authority, bit like Sports Direct/JJB.

Look for the outlet stores and head to under armour, it's the best stuff out there for the price.

Sears is good and the malls have all the sports or branded clothing.

Basically the UK gets absolutely ripped off for clothing. I buy Levi 501's for £25, in the UK £70!

Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren are good buys but don't forget the ticket price doesn't include the local taxes, which vary from state to state.

Macy's is good, and Friday -> Sunday they have sales. In addition, you can get a 10% tourist card (just ask) that gives you 10% off of all prices including sale ones.

Apart from that, Gap, Hollister, Old Navy are all good. And if you have a car there are outlets around Livermore.

Since you've had some good suggestions on stores, you could use something like hidemyass to have a look around the US web store.

It's a bit slow and clunky, and a bit hit and miss, but you can have a go yourself at https://www.hidemyass.com/proxy ... bottom of the page. From what I can make out, the URL you need is http://store.nike.com/us/en_us/pw/

Don't do this if you're at work, it's usually frowned on by your network security bods .

I am in the US so can give you some insight to shopping here. I wouldn't buy clothes in Sears as to me it is a place to buy tools from. Macy's is a good shout because there is always a sale on there. The quality of Macy's stores can be hit and miss though. Out let shopping can be a good way of getting a deal. Again, very dependent on location though. My experience is East coast. Woodbury common can be very good and is an easy drive from NYC. I bought a $1800 suit for $300 which my tailor described as excellent. This is high praise from a crazy Italian lady. check this website out for 2 options PREMIUM OUTLET CENTERS®

You can also consider buying on line and shipping to your hotel. Even if you have to pay for over night shipping it will still work out cheaper. For example,

7 For All Mankind
60% OFF!
MSRP $198.00
$79.99 - 50 quid

Online buying can be good IF ou know your size...

I find buying clothes in the US have different fittings to UK clothes and end up buying totally different sizes when I am in the US

I just returned from 3 weeks in the US with 3 suitcases, having left England with only 1.
The reason........ TJ Maxx and Marshalls.

If you like designer gear but don't want to pay designer prices then head there.... Levi 501s for $15, Ralph Lauren shirts for $20, RL Polo $10, the deals go on and on.

go to nike.com scroll down to the bottom, left bottom corner is the union jack and united kingdom, click on it and you will be taken to a page you can select which region you want, for your purposes you may want to select united states.

or click here

if your shopping in sears, they now have preferred pricing on some items for shop your way members, they will try and sign you up with your US phone number which you presumably don't have, they can do it by email address also if you ask, that way you can get the discount in return for some spam. You sign up at the till, you will notice they always ask for your phone number anyway, that's them either signing you up or entering your membership details

True Religion stuff for me, jeans were $130 compared to $300, they're one of the best fits I've ever had, except Nudie. Got them from Macys

Dont bother with Sears, it's like shopping in Target, they have cheap stuff, but it's crap. You can get better for the money without having to spend serious amounts

Century 21 in the financial district is very good for Ralph Lauren/Tommy Hilfiger at crazy prices. Can be hit and miss with what's there but it's almost rude not to buy a polo at $15!

I'm quite slim and American kids fat. So, to avoid State Sales Tax, I buy my clothes in the children's section of stores which is tax exempt. Ralph L shorts for $22 and just claim they're for the kids. burger

Simplest rule of thumb I've found is to avoid clothes originally from Europe. So, I tend to avoid buying Hugo Boss, Armani and Diesel in the USA. Boss and Diesel in particular are pretty much always more expensive unless they're part of a spectacular sale (which does happen).

Best value tends to be the US brands such as Hilfiger, True Religion and 7.

The above is pretty much my experience.

I find for most clothes at the normal shopping malls are very similarly priced to here. You do get stuff you can't buy here though.

The outlet malls are the place to go for cheap clothes.

I'm not long back and got a fair amount of Nautica and Ralph Lauren stuff.

I got two polo shirts, two pairs of shorts and a pair of jeans for about £80 from Nautica. A fraction of the cost here.

RL polo shirts worked out about £25-30 and jumpers about £35-40. Simple round neck t-shirts were on offer and only cost £12-13.

I had already bought Converse trainers as a gift. They were £27.5 but in the outlet place the Converse had clearance lines for £12. Converse are Converse and they are fine. Quite a few extra gifts of Converse came back.

Levis jeans are cheap too. She got 2 pairs of 501s for £45 total.

Certain clothes were much cheaper than others.
