Hi all,

Im looking at getting the older shape swift sport 1.6 125bhp and was wondering what the real world mpg is like NOT driving like a saint????

Giving it a bit of stick but not revving it nuts all the time.

Have a look at the PH mpg wiki.

The "local" mpg figure should give you an idea of daily MPG. Low 30's sounds about right.

what does local mean? like nipping to the shops, driving to a friends 2 miles away?

I get 33mpg around the centre of belfast, So congested and a lot of stop start traffic. I get around 36mpg on a run but I don't tend to hold back, I can get over 40mpg taking it slightly easier on said run.

i think as long as i get 30 plus ill be happy, my commute to work is 20 miles on 50/70 roads and apart from that its just nipping round mates/the gym etc etc.

So you give it stick and still get plus 30?

Fast is subjective. Coming from a 60hp Clio then yes, if coming from a 300hp Golf R then no.

Drive one, it's all entirely subjective.

IIRC some of the earlier ones were designed for 98RON; something to be aware of/look into perhaps?

We use Tesco momentum in ours and, now my partner is the main driver, it's averaged 36mpg over the last year. During my ownership, it averaged 33mpg and I don't drive particularly economically.

One thing I did notice is dropping the speed on motorways/DCs down to 65 seemed to make a large difference to economy so it could be something to keep in mind.

I get anywhere between 30-40 mpg depending on how I drive. I think my dash mpg reading at the moment is sitting at 36? That's with a 24 mile commute with a lot of motorway. My old 10 mile commute down smaller b roads was more like 34 average. I do tend to drive uneconomically though! You'd have to be really trying to get it under 30mpg smile

The swift is many things - but it is not fast. Coming from a 1.2 punto it felt fast for the first 2 weeks of driving it, but that has all but worn off now.

I'd suggest a test drive because there is a lot of cabin noise and the ride is pretty firm.

I think they changed the later models to run better on 95ron (57 on possibly?) - so my 2009 reg can run it. V-power does seem a bit smoother - but that could easily be placebo effect!

Overall they're great little cars - and as long as you're not expecting too much from one, I'm sure you'll love it.

Owned one for about 2 years. I absolutely loved the thing. Spent alot on modifications. Sold it for a Z4, I sometimes regret it.

Couldn't tell you. Dyno was giving me strange results. Something like 130 at the wheels and 156 at the fly.

The wife had one, really fun car to drive around town and on b-roads, really reliable and a nice interior which felt solid. The early to mid 30s mpg is about right but it's not a great motorway cruiser and gets noisy above 70. In the end it's why she got a 5 series as she was doing a long motorway commute.

Sister in law had one. Great little car and stood up to loads of abuse. Quite hard suspension and mid 30's mpg. Only issue she had was with the ESP light coming on and a buckled alloy wheel.

My mpg display on my Swift sport has been reading 38.3mpg all summer. It's now dropped to 38.1mpg due to colder weather/more heaters/lights being used. Last winter it hovered around 34mpg. I can categorically say I do not drive economically, I drive it in anger at times, and sometimes "extend" the rpm down dual carriageways, and sometimes I potter about, so a good mix.

I think you will struggle to do less than 30mpg, and the engine is as solid and reliable as anything out there in my opinion.

-Use 98ron petrol,
-You have to really get up it and use all the revs to make good progress, saying that it is forgiving to being left in the wrong gear at times, because the ratios are that short, so motorway driving becomes noisy after 60mph.
-Cornering is a giggle as well, turn in and theres little body roll, but make sure you can put up with the firm ride.
-It's a car thats put a smile on my face many times,is cheap compared to many cars, and is extremely reliable.
