I Think I Am About To Buy A Cerbera, Should I ?
Discussion
I had a road trip from Aberdeen to Hexham to test drive a Griffith 500 a couple of days ago, to get it out of the showroom a deep red Cerbera had to be moved, this car caught my eye so I asked for a drive in it.
I liked the Griff but loved the Cerb, it is a Speed 6.
I then drove to Skipton to try a 4.5 Cerb, the owner is a really nice chap and let me give the car a decent try out and it was VERY fast, but just not as nice to drive as the Speed 6.
So I am very tempted to give Hexham a call and tell them to prep the Cerb for me.
Does anyone know the car ? Is there any reason I shouldn't do it ?
Thanks

Another Cerb in Aberdeenshire can only be a good thing.
Being honest with yourself - can you afford the generally accepted annual running costs of an AJP or Speed Six car over a Rover V8? If so, then there's no reason not to get a Cerbera.
You'll know all the usual look-outs for a Speed Six I take it? Also did you look at that Cerb critically?

I thought I wanted a Rover engine car but the higher revving engine of the Speed 6 suits me much better,
I liked the performance of the AJP engine but around town it wasn't as pleasant as the S6.
As for running costs, well I know it can't be treated like a modern car and there will be ongoing running costs, I can accept that, I hoped someone might know the actual car and give me a heads up on any known issues if there are any.
The chap at Hexham, Tony, impressed me with his attitude toward customers and knowledge of the cars, but he is selling cars and if someone knows the car they might be able to say it is a really good one, or maybe not.

The AJP8 can be a bit rough at low speeds but they vary too. The Speed Six is a lovely engine. I don't know the specific car but hopefully someone else does.
I know someone else who swears by Hexham. My only contact has been an independent inspection they did of my car where they more or less condemned it to scrap. A few points raised were valid and fixed, but they were also various things noted which made the inspection read as though it were for a different car so I wouldn't trust them any more or less than anyone else selling their own stock.
If their Speed Six drove well it probably is a good one overall, but I wouldn't buy it without another visit to crawl over it again personally. Is there any mention of engine rebuilds or chassis condition in the ad? I'll go look it up myself...

Is it the Nightfire Red 2002? If so, it's been advertised for a long time. Not convinced it's worth £20k without a lot of expenditure that isn't mentioned in the ad. It could be a great one underneath - but other than a new clutch it doesn't really sound like it's had any of the usual Cerbera weak points addressed from what's written.
Cheers Guys
I asked about engine rebuild and it hasn't had one, the reason given being that it is a later engine and the issues had been sorted by then.
I had a good crawl over it with a mate who was with me and it seems to be in very good condition, but neither of us are TVR experts, I have been reading quite a bit about them recently though trying to get more familiar.

Cor,
Did you or have you previously checked out TVR Ecosse in Dundee. I'm from Alford and am looking to invest in a TVR and just wondered if you had dealt with these people before. I see they have a couple of Cerbs both sub 20k, but that's probably because they are also older than 2002.

I'll vouch for Barry at TVR Ecosse. Did you or have you previously checked out TVR Ecosse in Dundee. He's not as big as Str8six or Powers but he's honest and works very hard to please his customers.
I went for virtually the same spec Cerb in 2012 after driving a few V8's and S6's. Ended up spending alot on it (well documented on here), but very happy with result. I'm amazed that one has hung around so long - I haven't seen it, but on paper I would have bought that car if I'd still been in the market.

The website is not updated so not accurate.
None of the cars would start without a jumpstart, I thought as he knew I was coming that would be addressed.
The only car I drove had a faulty power steering pump so was a bit odd to drive.
All that said Barry did come across as a genuine and likeable chap and if he had a car that suited me I would be happy to deal with him.

He's been stretched for time this year. Much of that has been my fault!
Jamie what have you been doing to the poor man! He's so busy, I've bought the crystal topaz cerb from him , picking it up at the end of the month. I live down south so I'm jumping on a plane to get it !!If your up that way I'm picking it up on the 30th October . If I'm lucky I'll get a drive in my old cerb aswell as Barry owns this too, needless to say I'm VERY excited to get back into cerb ownership after a four year break. I've just got to do an eight hour drive home from Dundee, shame !! 😃
Loved my Cerbera, wish I'd never sold it, so I think you should go for it!
4.2 was good enough for me, the S6 had too many engine rebuild horror stories at the time I was buying. Best thing I ever did was take it to Track v Road in Clitheroe. They totally configured the suspension and it went from scary to predictable and fun. They source cars too so might be worth giving them a show. They are ex-factory chaps so know pretty much all there is to know about them.
Driving a C4S now but miss the exhaust note of the Cerb so I'm looking at way to turn up the volume to match the TVR....
