Dave, I know but I wanted to get the original bung. Having said that, your option looks ideal, I'm going to give them a buzz today after 9am. and order one. If OK I'll let everyone know. I'm not sure a group buy is really worth the hassle as it only saves a bit and then means sending out each bung individually. Anyway I'll keep all informed. Pete

I'm afraid that has drawn a blank. The 100mm refers to the outside diameter of the tubing these bungs are made for, therefore the internal diameter of the hole for these is somewhere between 91-96mm, which by my reckoning is too small. The guy at Ross didn't have an alternative. Ho-hum, back to Plan A but I don't have a Plan A. Anybody got any ideas? Pete

OK chaps. I followed up on this and spoke to a helpful guy at Essentra Components:

http://www.essentracomponents.co.uk/standard-round...

They are sending me a sample of the 105mm and 110mm bung. Price each is approximately £6.00 but if I buy a pack of 100 the price goes down to about £1.88 each (plus VAT + P&P). Assuming they work, can you give me an indication of who would be interested in this non-standard article to see whether it's worth me buying a pack of 100. Cheers, Pete

Well done on the research.

That looks like a plastic bung. Can't see where it says what mterial its made from.

IIRC the original bungs are rubber (albeit fairly stiff) as the hole they go into isn't on a flat surfact and thefore the need to deform into a curve which a plastic bung may not be able to do (dependant upon how thick and resilient the plastic is).

Might want to wait until you've tried fitting on before taking orders?

Hi,

I’m sitting here at my desk at work with a pile of these in front of me, when I saw this thread!

I wonder if they’ll work. They’re to fit a 100mm hole. I’ll try it in my TVR to see if they fit and stay in. We use them in boats to fill speaker holes which are pre-drilled by the factory and the customer doesn’t want a stereo. They’re cheap enough if I order a lot (they come from France).

Dan

Sounds promising, good research, let us know how it plays out when your sample arrives.

Excellent!!

Now that really looks like it could work well clap

Clearly the concourse boys would need to paint it black though hehe

Yup, you are correct as I have an original in one of my Griffs (sorry to swear again...). When I get my samples I will try it and report back. My only concern is the plastic used. I am not sure how much heat is generated at the bellhousing. Let's wait and see as well as getting some feedback on the alternatives also being offered on this thread. Pete

OK guys, reporting back. Not all good news. Essentra kindly sent me samples of their 105mm plug, item 465596. The plug fits the hole and grips fairly well. I can't comment on its ability to withstand heat but I don't imagine it will melt.

The problem really is (highlighted in one of the threads) the bellhousing is curved and the plug is flat and therefore it stands proud at the edge and there is a small gap. To be honest, I give it 6/10 and as I have one of the original plugs, it is very different - a bit disappointing but I wouldn't order in bulk. I would fit one of these plugs as a stop-gap but continue to look for a proper solution - opinions? Pete

Pete, if you cut a small V in the walls of the cup at either side would t allow it to bend and fit better or is the cap part far to thick and stiff to bend? Alternatively would a bit of heat allow it to bend?

I'll try to get my TVR up on my ramps at some point next week to try my cap too.

I think my point is that this is a good 'stop gap' but the purists won't like it and it is not as good as the original closed grommet. I would use this until I found a better solution however if I bought 100 I think I would have problems getting rid of them despite the price drop.

I will keep looking. Anyone have any ideas? Pete

An update for those interested in the original ones, mines on it's way, not particularly cheap at £20, but in the grand scheme of things it's not a lot really and it'll actually fit properly.
If you want the details of who to order from them message me and I'll forward on the details.
I think he has a limited supply so if you want one then crack on.
Regards, russell.

Russell, yes please. I didn't realise you had managed to source them as you had gone a bit silent. Do you think they are old stock or he could have some more made? Pete

Tried my bung, it fits, diameter is spot on, but the curve in the gearbox means it just won't sit flush. I wouldn't use it, it'll probably fall out as it won't sit in flat. Shame.

Looks fine to me, the purpose of the grommet is to stop stones and other road debris entering the bell housing when the car is being driven.

To this end the above closing plug seems to work perfectly, and while not original looking we need to understand the damn thing sits under the car and will never be seen.

If the object of the exercise is to close the access/inspection hole in the bell housing to stop stones and other road debris entering I'd say the above is more than fine.

It even has a little gap to let the inevitable oil drip out rather than collect inside the bell housing to eventually contaminate the driven plate wink

However after all this I have to say I don't have a grommet in my bell housing and haven't had one for years, I've never had a stone or anything else find its way inside there, never heard of it happening to anyone else either nono
