Hi all, been van driving for too long now, time to actually make a living from driving so planning on doing my class training all the way up to class one in a single hit. I found this on jobsite

http://www.jobsite.co.uk/job/train-to-be-a-hgv-dri...

Works out at £3600, includes theory, 16 hours training for class 2, class 2 test, 16 hours training for class 1, class 1 test, 2 re-tests if I fail with an additional 4 hours training, my CPC, tachometer card and a guaranteed job interview, the whole lot takes 16 weeks from start to finish and I can pay it off monthly if I want. Sounds ace? Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? I think their projected earnings may be a little off for Cornwall but I do have an agency ready to take me on the day I pass my test for class 1 work £24000 pa.

Also, assuming I pass, what's the most profitable type of class 1 haulage? I really want to work my arse off and make this pay, I'm 29 with 3 kids, no mortgage, need to get cracking!

Cheers.

No, no And thrice no!

Don't give your money to lying bds like those! They'll promise everything and deliver nothing, I fell for this one for my class 2 when I was young and foolish. 9 years I've been waiting for my "guaranteed interview"...

Find yourself a nice local respected one man band type of training school. Probably be cheaper and with a higher standard of training.

Best of luck with your tests.

Agree about steering clear of this type of thing via an agency.
You could try Gregory Distribution, not sure how far they are from you but they were advertising for new drivers to be trained up from car licence, paid a salary from when you start training and then you repay them via your wage every month with, I suspect, a clause in your contract regarding full payment should you decide to leave early. At least this way you are fully employed rather that literally being the agencies biatch.

Also look a what the wages are... There is a fair amount of minimum wages in the Hgv game from what I am finding out at the moment and a lot of overseas drivers are being taken on at that level.

Wow thanks chaps, Celtic driver training is a full £1000 cheaper all the way to class 1 with all the trimmings except the job interview. I've sold my boat to free up monthly payments for finance but it it's that cheap I'll just pay it outright! Glad I asked now!

I spoke to Gregory, they advertised 3 weeks ago, within 2 days they had over 200 applications, they're obliged to offer 8 positions a month so there's a chance but not sure I can wait that long for what could be an age. I'm knocking on 30 still earning sweet f.a. So need to get cracking!

Seems to be around £24k for class 1, I have a few friends in the right places luckily, think there's a bit of an issue in deep west cornwall when It comes to finding people with a CPC from what I've heard.

That is way too much money fella, don't go with that price - shop around and play a few companies off of each other.

FWIW the driver CPC is such a load of bks - money down the drain imo.

I think the driver cpc is ace from my stand point it has flushed the old semi retired guys/ farmers / guys doing it for a bit of extra out of the system , the very same guys who would work for peanuts to top up their pensions and or other incomes and by doing so hold down the pay rates for the rest of us who need to earn a living.

I say this as a ex driver recruiter who used these very same guys as they would work for less than guys who needed to earn a decent wage. here in the east midlands I have already noticed an increase in job adverts for hgv drivers

I can understand the CPC from that angle. Many will refuse to do the CPC and free up seats for those who have done the right thing.

A: an immigrant in your trailer?

B: a night at the Hilton with Chantelle and big pile of Columbia's finest export?

C: hopefully both classes and the option of a free re-test?

Everything from them sorting your provisional and medical to class 1. TBH I cant remember if it included the cpc. That's based on not needing loads of hours driving before your tests obviously the costs go up the more you do.

I'd always thought classes 1, 2 and 3 were scrapped in 1997 when the licence categories changed.

Old farts like me will know what you mean but it's been C1, C and C + E for a long time hasn't it?

Very true and those using the old terminology can make thing confusing as they refer to totally different things

1991 was the change not 1997
