I’ve managed to get my “default” removed from my credit file. I had a dongle from T Mobile for my laptop in 2008 and cancelled it in 2010 and though I had paid any outstanding balance off (it was £17 per month) in accordance with the cancellation policy. I moved house around this time and was unaware I owed them an outstanding balance of £17 , they didn’t chase it (or I never received any letters) but as they are not regulated by the consumer credit act, after 6 months a default was placed on my credit file which I was unaware of until I tried to get a credit agreement with a prime lender (Halifax, whom I bank with) was refused and checked with Experian. Now a default is as bad to lenders (doesn’t matter how much, research showed one for 0.57p) as bankrupt, CCJ’s etc and should stay on file for 6 years from the date of default. In the mean time I receive regularly application forms for Vanquish credit cards at 42% interest. I wrote a letter to EE (now own T Mobile) customer services but received no reply so I emailed the Head of Customers Services with a copy of the letter and yesterday received an email saying they are removing it. So it can be done.

Has it actually been wiped from your credit file entirely? or just marked as paid/satisfied.

Will be removed (marked as satisfied in 2011)

Dear Mr Stamp ,

Thank you for your email dated 29 September 2014, addressed to xxxxxxxx, Chief Customer Officer - EE. I have been asked to respond on this occasion.

Please accept my apologies for the issues that you have faced. I understand you were not aware of the £17.00 outstanding balance, due to moving homes. Once you realised, I can see that you made payment for the amount in question.

Due to the above, I have requested that your Credit File is amended. This will ensure that the default is removed from your credit file. The process can take up to 30 days to complete.

Thank you for your patience and for bringing this matter to my attention.

Have a nice day.

Yours sincerely

Good work if they fully remove it from your file! In my experience, mobile phone companies, are usually extremely difficult to deal with and would only ever remove something if it was given to you in error. Almost all mobile phone defaults are from when clients either end contracts and cancel the direct debit before the last payment is due or move home and a bill subsequently arrives and doesn't get paid. In all the instances I've see like the above they've simply told the client it was their fault that they cancelled the DD or didn't inform them of moving home, issued the default and thats it, with the only action being taken was to mark the default as satisfied.

Congrats if they remove it entirely for you! smile

I had a similar issue with Vodafone when getting a mortgage three years ago.

They placed a default on my credit file after failing to close an account for a phone I ordered in-store but never collected (due to a delay and choosing anther phone elsewhere). Despite me ringing and calling in to the store to cancel, said account remained open for 7 months and accrued 'unpaid bills of £25 per month with no communication from Vodafone to me.

Pleased to say they sorted it pretty quickly once notified - although I did have to physically write to them - and removed the defaults completely from my file.

So, yes, it can be done! Good result for the OP too smile
