What's an "acceptable" and reasonable daily journey to and from work? All I can find is a bit grey and non committal! Anyone able to offer anything concrete?

I'm expected to drive 120 miles each way which takes around 2hrs 10mins on average and work 8 to 5 mon to fri.

We need more info. Has the office moved and it's now that far away from you?

Or have you just taken a job that far away and not happy about it?

That is a long commute, but it's irrelevant until you provide more details.

I manage construction sites. It's a company car with fuel card so that's not a problem.

Serious staffing issues further away from my job have meant a shuffle round for many people to cover all jobs. Short term I'm fine with it but I (and others in the same situation) feel it may be more longer term

Where is your permanent place of work specified as?

You could technically start at 0800 from there to get to site and leave site in time to be back for 1700. Probably wouldn't do your career a lot of good though.

Speak to your boss, that's a lot to do every day on a medium to long term basis.

As my grandad always said;

"work starts the moment you walk out the front door".

I drive 70 mile round trip per day, stoke to wolverhampton and back again, it is longer than i would like but love the job and environment so dont have plans to move or do anythingabout it. Takes me 45 minutes in the morning but anything between an hour and hour 20 mins in the evening.

I was driving 12 miles and it took 2 hours in the morning. Now found alternative transport!

2 hours isn't acceptable if I had to do that I wouldn't get home to see the little one as he would be in bed. It's all about work life balance and that's too much work and not enough life!

This. Can't get home to see my daughter before bed.

0-59 minutes is a commuter; 59 minutes and beyond is a super-commuter. Routine super-commuting is recognised as not being good for your health. I'd seriously review my options in this case. Good luck!

8 minutes on a push bike.

It's worth rather a lot of money to me.

Anything over an hour regularly would do my head in. Depends on the money though.

I'd probably do 2 hours for silly money. Probably not for very long at all though.

Salary. Win some lose some. Even if it was double money it still doesn't give you the time back sat in the car and time away from family

30-35 minutes for a daily static office commute by car IMHO. Anywhere up to 2hrs for field sales, and train I think is 45-1hr (never having done it) if you can work whilst travelling.

Although as Mr E says, 8mins by bike means I appreciate my commute a whole lot more!

Depends on salary. I've done an hour and a bit before and that's the max for me. I prefer to travel an hour at motorway speeds then an hour in traffic.

It depends on the drive for me.

I used to commute anywhere between 40 minutes on a very good (rare) day, to 2 hours going from Worcester to Solihull. Hated that drive, just motorway, traffic jams, utterly horrible.

Currently commute a 40 minute drive around the lanes and love it.

That being said, one job I lived a 2 minute walk away which was brilliant as it meant going home for lunch, longer in bed in the mornings, and frees up time and energy at night.

House to Work by bike, 30 mins.

House to Work by car, 25 mins + 10 mins parking. And then a walk.

Time to put dry socks on?

The same. (Yes, got bleedin' soaked this morning);)

I drive for about an hour in the morning and the same coming home, it's about 40 miles each way.

Thanks all. It's Chippenham to Exeter so short bit of M4 and about 85 miles of M5.
