cam wear on a 2006 A3 2litre TFSI?
Discussion
Hi all
gf has a 2006 A3 2 litre TFSI - couple of weeks ago it developed a erratic idle, then the EML came on while driving. I thought it sounded a bit like a tractor since ive known her (a few months) and is "ticking" while running.
The garage have said there is a issue with the cam "shoulders" and they are worn, repair bill is £1500! She bought the car new, has FSH, belt changed in 2011 and only done 70k miles so not happy!
Any immediate thoughts? Google shows up some issue relating to the high pressure fuel pump driven off the cam...

Sounds like the garage have already checked the high pressure pump's cam follower and found it to be worn through, which has taken the cam out. Very common on 2005 - 2006 cars.
The chain and tensioner are a weak point on 2005 - 2006 cars as well, so you may as well do those whilst you're there.
VW hardened the cams for the 2007 model year, but the follower still needs periodic checking. Every second oil change being the general advice.
Unfortunately the powertrain warranty is only 3 years in the UK, but for this specific problem, US customers have had their warranty extended to 120K miles or 10 years.
Try and speak to Audi and get them to cough up some of the bill. As the original owner and FSH, you should get some kind of good will contribution, but not all of it I'm afraid.

VR6, spot on - i found link below earlier. The work has just been finished at mates rates but still not far off 4 figures i believe. Havent seen the bill but list of parts inc 3 cam followers that were trashed, fuel pump, new chain plus other bits.

I will suggest a letter to audi esp if the USA recall is 10 years/120k!! May get some good will for the parts. Wont hold our breath....
