BBC are reporting

"In an interview with the BBC carried out before the news of his suspension, he said controlled immigration and an EU referendum were "not achievable with UKIP"

"Before" being the most interesting word in that sentence

Its messy that's for sure.
It's a dirty game for sure. Timing is suspect.

I'm quite disappointed with the departure of Bashir.

Firstly if the allegations are substantiated I would not be surprised if the Cons took him anyway but I would be disappointed because Bashir seemed one of the more down to earth MEPs and it would be a shame if has let people down.

I would be more disappointed if the allegations have reappeared because he was looking at defecting. That would place UKIP in the worst possible position IMO. I can forgive amateurish behaviour with presentation to a point, but I would not be impressed with an attempt to smear someone who defects.

Not a good day for UKIP, but, possibly not a good day for the Conservatives.

Just as an aside - Bashir was on the UKIP's MEP list and he has potentially quite sometime to go as an MEP (allegations notwithstanding), shouldn't he resign? People voted for the candidates and the party - if I had voted UKIP and got Con/Lab/Lib a few months later I would be very cross. Also, until a couple of days ago Bashir was tweeting anti-govt opinions... but the Tories said Reckless and Carswell were traitorous liars for defecting... although both did the decent thing and gave the electorate a chance to endorse their new suit.

BBC also reporting

BBC said:
The defection is thought to have been brokered by another Tory MEP, the heavily Eurosceptic Daniel Hannan.

There are already rumours that at least one other UKIP MEP is considering their position following Mr Bashir's resignation.

"I've seen Ukip both at home and abroad, and I'm sorry to say they're pretty amateur. In the European Parliament, some of their MEPs think it's acceptable to shout and fool round." - Bashir

so he has never seen PMQs I guess?

This is going to be fun

And in other news, Europe wide support for the EU is crashing.

Suspect indeed...

'Finally, at a selection meeting for the Keighley constituency in Bradford last week, Bashir’s associate Mujeeb Bhutto turned up with twelve other individuals – who were not Ukip members and were signed up on the door. The local party was unhappy about this situation — as recorded in the leaked minutes of the Bradford meeting.

Bashir was due to attend a recent meeting with top Ukip officials to discuss these allegations but he did not turn up. His defection to the Conservatives came soon after.'

One thing puzzles me about that Steve (well more than one, but lets start with this).

Google suggests that Paul Latham was selected as the UKIP candidate for Keighley back in October. So why would there be a selection meeting last week?

Oh I'm sure there's some Kipper wheat amongst the chaff. I was talking about generic target groups - eg poorly educated, angry white people in rundown (seaside) towns.
Talking of hate - where is the positivity in the UKIP mantra? It's all about hatred, fear & ignorance. Without these things UKIP doesn't even have an agenda. It has absolutely nothing to offer people who lead satisfying, [b]reasonably happy lives.

I'm genuinely surprised by this.

I really don't know.

I'm a kipper, and I am very happy with my lot in life.

Other "kippers" also seem to be content.

Here is a question for you all.

UKIP had to find 1 moreMEP recently for their EU group (Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy) as otherwise they would have lost their voice and funding so struck a deal with a Polish MEP .

So with Bashir gone, does he now count as Tory MEP automatically, so do UKIP need to find one more again to replace? As was a struggle last time and that Polish guy was a bit borderline.

Strange - the Bashir thing.

Quote from the Telegraph.

Mr Cameron said:
“I’m absolutely delighted that Amjad has decided to leave Ukip and join the Conservative Party.

His story is inspiring.

It’s another sign that in this great country of ours you can come to Britain without very much and you can be a member of the European Parliament, an MP, sit in the Cabinet. I think it's an inspiring story and one I’m very proud to have sitting as a Conservative."

Mr Bashir was previously a Conservative for 15 years.
He resolutely believes that immigration should be controlled - these are words attributed to him:
'We have to seriously restrict immigration to the people who can add value to our country.’

He said:
‘I entered public life to campaign for a referendum on Europe and a controlled immigration system.'
Most of his career he ran restaurants in Manchester and Bradford.

Hmm.
Last year it was revealed that a Manchester curry house run by Mr Bashir’s sons, Tayub and Mudassar, had been fined an undisclosed amount for employing illegal immigrants.

Dave, you can have him back!

No. Bashir is refusing a by-election.

CMD has taken one hell of a risk. It could pay off, but it could massively backfire. UKIP won't have made up that a file has been sent to the police.
