Dipping my toe into the world of Mini ownership. Can someone tell me if this is a Gen I or Gen II car?

http://www.savillepark-halifax.co.uk/used-cars/min...

I understand that they changed in 06 but I cannot see an obvious way to differentiate. I thought the dash went from five components down to three but I have seen cars before '06 with a three component dash.

Is there an obvious way to tell A Gen I and Gen II apart?
Is there an obvious way to tell a One and a Cooper apart?

With some many optioins available it is hard to fathom what is out there. For example, I thought Coopers came with a two tone paint job between the body and roof and yet the one above is a showed as a One but has the aforementioned. Ahhhh, too much customisation!

Thanks in advance,

As mentioned, this is a face-list R50 Gen 1 car. Facelifts were built from around May/June of 2004.

The contrast roof was not a factory option, but it is quite common to see people paint the roofs on their Ones to match Coopers.

The 3 piece/5 piece dash was a pre & post facelift 1st Gen thing only. The 3 piece dash is found on facelifted cars (as you posted), and 5 piece is for pre-facelifted cars.

Gen 2 cars had a completely different dash;

This is a Gen 1 Dash (this is a facelifted interior)

This is a Gen 2 (R56) dash;

There are quite a few ways to tell a One from a Cooper (the list below is for 1st Gen only), but with everything being easily changed or made to look like a Cooper, it can be a little difficult.

  • Badging, if still there
  • Interior. A One with the standard seats will look different to standard Cooper seats, although the optional sports seats look identical.
  • Exhausts have different tips, although many have been replaced by generic aftermarket items, so difficult to tell between them.
  • Very basic Ones will have plastic boot handles and grilles rather than chrome finish, as well as steel wheels.
There are far more that I haven't mentioned, but the most foolproof way is putting the reg number through the DVLA website or similar.

My 03 R50 Cooper was green and had matching roof & mirrors so not all Coopers had contrasting roof/mirrors wink

The instant give away on that car/ those photos is the headlights. Gen1 MINIs had the headlights attached to the bonnet so when you open the bonnet the headlights go up. Gen 2 MINIs have holes in the bonnet and the headlights in the engine bay....

Now that is a very useful nugget of information.

My wife has now turned her attention back to a Gen I convertable. Time to start learning about those....

The advantage with the Convertibles as far as you are concerned is that they stayed as Gen1 for a couple of years after the hard top cars had changed to Gen2. My Mrs has a Gen1 Cooper S conv 2008.
