I bought my Seat Ibiza FR last Autumn and noticed these symptoms, it was still under warranty so got it checked out thinking the dmf was on the way out. Despite having only done 28k it turned out the clutch was worn out (and blue from excessive heat - despite one careful lady owner!) and the release bearing was also changed. The dmf however was in spec so was left alone.

It was a bit quieter after this but has just recently become more noisy. I think the recent colder weather may have contributed to this but even still it seems excessively noisy to me. I'm worried that even if it isn't the the dmf, it may be that the gearbox input could have got excessively hot.

Does anyone else have this with their 2.0 cr?

When do you notice the chatter the most?

When idling having started the car cold. Putting the clutch in in nuetral sounds quite loud, you can easily hear it outside the car too. But it only really makes the noise when the clutch is half way down, not fully out or in. Once the car's warmed up you can't really hear anything.

I know how particlar VAG are about unwanted noise so I find it difficult to believe everything's normal, but then I've had a 350Z which was the same, though that is a well known character trait of that particular car.

Is it a single mass flywheel on that model mate? Reason I'm asking is the dual mass ones have a habit of chattering, but converting to a single mass one hasn't ended well for me at the moment,it's damaged the crankshaft on my '08 Octavia and I need to go back to DMF to stop it happening again.
If it's just noise and been checked out by a decent mechanic I wouldn't worry too much if it's a SMF,maybe get a secong opinion from a decent independent just to be sure.

This sounds normal to me but I would get it checked just to be sure, clutch and flywheel failure can be ruled out by a trained ear. The rattle you hear at biting point in neutral is gears and synchro's on the input shaft rattling as rotation is restarted by the clutch. When in gear, the shaft is engaged with the output shaft and thus, you get no noise. No abnormal mechanical wear takes place during the rattling, but saying that, how often does the clutch get used and a gear not be selected?

Thanks bigjobbo, guess I just would have thought the input shaft etc would also do this in neutral with the clutch fully released. I had a 350Z which did the same thing but that was a v crude car, whereas I know how particular VAG are about unwanted noises. For example I've done the turbo silencer-ectothermic and you can still barely hear it (don't know why they bothered!)
