I've just bought an old A4 1.9 TDI estate, it has been sitting for 2 Years but seems to run fine, started straight up with a charged battery.
It doesn't seem smoky at low revs but when you rev it past about 3000 rpm it kicks out a decent amount of black smoke.
I've just put some fresh diesel in it with a bottle of injector cleaner and changed the air filter will this make a difference when it gets through the engine?.
Has anyone got any ideas why it might be a bit more sooty than normal?, or does it just need a good run to clear it out a bit?.
I've got an MOT on Monday.

what engine code is it i have a 1997 1.9 tdi afn , the pump timing is critical to tdc as mine smoked when revving above 2500 rpm. I set the pump up with a dti gauge and this stopped it smoking and just passed mot with no problems on smoke emissions.

I will have a look, it's an R reg so probably similar to yours, it also seems to completely hit a brick wall at 3k rpm in 5th gear on the motorway which is weird, seems fine around town.

Check the boost hose ( rubber pipe ) for cracks / splits – this could cause the symptoms you describe

Yes this happened to mine recently. Small rubber pipe on the driver's side of the engine. Mine was a small split, very easy fix.

Are you referring to the small vaccum pipe hoses or a different one directly from the turbo?.
I had one of the vacum pipe hoses fail on a Passat TDI 130 I owned a while back and that just went straight into limp mode in all gears, this feels a bit different to that.
Will have a look about tomorrow though, drivers side by the turbo?.

I notice any splits in the pipes, I also plugged it into VAG.com and no fault coades were showing, but I'm not sure if it would need to go to 3000 rpm in 5th to trigger them?.
