hi chaps, thinking of getting out to somewhere relatively close to london for 3 nights in that dead zone after new years day

I'm after somewhere fairly luxurious with nice grounds, good food and a great indoor swimming pool for the kids (must be a child friendly place, ages 8 & 13) but don't really want anywhere too formal

thoughts so far:

the Grove: looks nice but looking for something a bit more special perhaps
Chewton Glen: too toppy really at ~4k for a 3 day break
Lucknam Park: not too bad pricewise and looks really nice

any other offers ?

hav also ruled out the 4 seasons in hampshire as weve been there before and want somewhere different

Inverlochy Castle at Fort William is absolutely outstanding.

ETA. Just read the proximity to London requirement. Shame frown

Try the Spread Eagle in Midhurst, West Sussex.

Great hotel in a fantastic market town.

+1 for Coworth Park. Very nice and they didn't give a monkeys about me and the family turning up looking like a set of drowned rats after a day at Legoland.

I know it's not close to London (Loch Lomond!), but my son still talks of the Room (had a corner turret) and the lift (leather lined) and the especially the Indoor Pool (see website).
We had a wonderful time and it wasn't formal or stuffy.

We also took out the cabin cruiser on the Loch and the Quad Bikes were great too!
