Emirates - Upgrade on the day?
Discussion
If you have miles it is very difficult!
Paying cash depends a lot on which type of ticket you have, to upgrade a discounted ticket you have to pay the discount up to the full economy fare plus the upgrade - so i was told when i tried not so long ago. It can be easier for the return home as you have started your journey, go to the Emirates desk before you check in at the destination airport.
You can also look on the Emirates site under manage my booking as well for more info.

Although not managed to buy anything with miles yet, I have around 58k, I think it seems best to buy the flight from the Emirates web site, although always a bit more expensive, by using the 'book with miles' link after logging into miles account.
It does seem quite tricky to pin then down at the Airport desk! They always seem to want a fair bit of cash!

Not if you have a discounted ticket though!
There are some differences between the Skywards Saver and Skywards Flex fares - Saver you cannot upgrade in advance, only at check-in or the airport. Also costs you a bit more to upgrade. But that should be all really, if they have seats you should be able to upgrade even on discounted fares.Whenever I've flown out of gatwick to DXB the line at the bottom of the check in desk screens offers upgrades. I did it once for about £360 ish if memory serves. Flew out of Heathrow a couple of weeks ago and asked at the check in counter, they guy apologised that the flight was full, no word of a lie.
Not sure how busy the Brum flight is. Given that dubai is a great place to connect on to destinations around the Indian subcontinent and indeed some places you can't get to direct from the UK a lot of the Emirates flights are very busy.

I can attest to this; flown BC with Emirates 6 times (3x return) since April on the LHR-DXB route and every single time the top deck is completely full; I think maybe one or two suites were open in First but that's it. It never fails to amaze me how full their planes are; even the DXB-Dar legs are full!Kenty said:

We found the same a couple of years ago...had miles which were expiring (we hadn't been able to use them 2 years before because of no availability), this time tried to use them well in advance, told to book cattle-class on their website then call through. THEN we were told "no availability on the legs you've booked".Rather disappointed with Emirates customer service, TBH - complete disinterest at all stages.
Well I am typing this from the lounge at Dubai.
I fly with Emirates to Singapore every month. But the customer will only pay Cattle!!
Anyway I am now a gold member and have only been up graded 4 times. I asked today at the lounge how busy is the flight (gives a good indication to the likely hood of me being moved up!!) And as normal Business and first a over booked and looking at brings a couple of customer down!!!!!!
So stuck in cattle again!!
A tip - if you want a bigger chance, travel during the week and NOT Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday - they are peek days, the rest of the week is a lot less busy with more room for movement.
So another drink before the next 6 hour flight and finally home.
