Not exactly Land Rover's finest hour.
Packed full of utterly ste electrics.
Looks like a tidy enough example though, and mileage is on the low side given it's knocking on the door of 20 years old.

I bought the same model and same year about 16 months ago for £1200. Keep looking smile

Thx for the advice. I've seen 2 or 3 about this age and around the £2-3k mark but not sure which engine etc I should be going for? Just want a winter runaround really.

Hi GDub

I would advise buying land rover monthly or international magazine and having a read... These P38 Range Rovers are cheap for a reason, as previously mentioned they have a track record for electrical headaches and unreliability. Just too complicated for their own good. I had one for a year or so.. (When they were still current).. Endless issues with compressors and bags and windows.., just a real headache and pain in the wallet.

But if you do insist on buying one..try and find an enthusiasts car... From the aforementioned magazines ...I Suggest the 4.6V8

Alternatively ... Try an older Land Rover Discovery, especially v8 or the best you can find Jeep Cherokee 1984-2001 4.0 high output.

I ran a P38 for 3 winters up to this year. They are great cars if you get a good one, nothing else comes close for the money. Check the air suspension as replacement is expensive, check that there are no engine leaks and make sure everything works - press all the buttons and make sure they do what they are supposed to. Make sure all the door locks work, they are notorious for failure and expensive to replace. Put the car in low range and make sure it runs properly when you do. Test drive it well and get it fully up to temp. It looks nice, it's one owner and low mileage, they say it has fsh and was serviced this month. If you feel all is ok, ask yourself this - what else are you going to get for so little money that will take you (literally) anywhere in luxury?

Valid point. Thx. With the P38 it seems like you have to do everything you can to check it's ok and then cross your fingers that you have a good one. But this one's just come up locally so may go and take a look at it to give me some idea.

But now starting to think that it may be worth spending that bit extra and getting an L322 and keeping it for a while. Seems to be lots of choice around the 7 to 10 k mark?

I'd say an L322 will be a more reliable bet, BUT you could simply use (part of) your increased budget to buy the very best P38 you can find.

I gather the base models are better for reliability as there's less to go wrong, so something like a 2.5 DHSE would be a worthwhile bet.

An older L322 won't necessarily be without problems. Do your research and buy wisely in all cases.
