The Pizza Hut buffet thread reminded me of a situation I had last week with some Pizza Hut food that was delivered to my house. It's a bit of a weird one though...

A month or so back, I hadn't 'hit the Hut' for years, preferring my usual Dominoes. But I was with a mate who suggested going in, so we visited one of their restaurants.

I was pleasantly surprised - the pizza I chose was lovely, really tasty. It was a slightly 'hot' one, so it had a nice kick to it, the toppings were really nice, and the dough was very well done - just the right balance between soft and crispy, with a nice 'Olive-Oily' texture.

Anyway, a Pizza Hut 'delivery and take-away only' shop has recently opened up in my town. So I gave it a go. First of all, I found their online ordering a bit of a faff, and then I was disappointed to see that the Pizza I had in the restaurant was not listed, so I had to go for something different. I also ordered another one so my family had two to mix and match from.

When they turned up - first of all, they weren't exactly piping hot, but warm enough to be acceptable. Anyway, I dug in and.....urrrghh! It was NASTY! The dough was hard and chewy, the toppings were hard, and overall the entire things were totally dry and tasteless!

They could not have been more different from the one in the restaurant. We took one slice from each, and almost immediately stopped eating. The box lids got closed and we cooked something else.

So what gives here? Are the collection / take-away shops using a totally different set of ingredients? Different cooking methods? Or what???

As an amusing aside, I took the pizzas back the next day. I spoke to a clueless chav girl first who called her 'manager' over - a lanky child with too many arm tattoos. I explained the situation, and he first offered to cook me two more, then after I said I didn't want any more, started to discuss vouchers. I stopped him and said 'look mate, I just want a refund...'

He genuinely looked lost. He said that he didn't do refunds, but after I insisted, he scuttled off to call his 'boss.' When he came back, he did give me a refund, but he said that they don't normally do refunds, and that it was a one-off, and I'd not get a refund again next time. Not wishing to go into huge detail and argue the toss about consumer rights, I just took the money and left, reminding him that 'there wouldn't be a next time, so don't worry' biggrin

They are a franchise, so it does vary between outlets. The restaurant must have been one of the good ones, and you just got unlucky with the takeaway place.

I only every order from the Hut/Dominoes when they have a really good offer on. Most offers don't interest me as it's normally "Spend £25 and get £10 off"... and I can't eat £25 worth of stuff! But recently they had a "Spend £15, get 50% off" which was perfect for me. My takeaway branch is a good one.

^^^ this, they vary town to town. The worst one I had was a domino pizza where the preparer clearly hadn't washed their hands as the crust stunk like an ashtray!

I rarely go near Pizza Hut. Never have I actually thought any of them are good and that's sitting in.

I wouldn't think to order for home delivery.

Some of the Domino's Pizzas I really like though. They are much better.

The Domino's shop isn't far for me, so I prefer to collect mine when it is fresh. The worry for me is the pizza is cold or sweaty in the boxes they use to keep them in.

Pizzas always seem to be on special offer up here.

It will be the franchise, we had a dominoes franchise near me they stopped doing delivery to our location 5miles away, but wasn't a problem as used to drive past on the way back from hockey, every time there was something wrong with the pizzas from wrong size to wrong toppings to just looking inedible. After complaining to the store a few times I contacted head office and suggested a visit.

Changed to a dominoes 6 miles away, what a difference the menu was better, the staff were better and the food tasted good.

I noticed Pizza Hut restaurants are doing lunch time buffets again I haven't been in years is it worth a crack?

I gave up with Pizza Hut years ago after having a couple of bad experiences with them. I ordered a delivery from the local branch and when it turned up the pizza was still raw in the middle! Took it back to them and they pretty much denied all knowledge of it! Another time I ordered from a different branch and the pizza was just disgusting! Really dry and crusty as though it was one they had found down the back of the oven.

I only really order pizza from Dominos these days. The local one to home is very good and in 3 years of ordering from there I have never had a bad one.

Used my local Pizza Hut delivery for the first time at the weekend, won't be using it again. Had to go and collect it in the end as we lost patience waiting for delivery. I've had frozen supermarket pizza's that are better at a fraction of the cost too.

A mate of mine was doing deliveries for a Pizza hut takeaway shop. All the pizza's they have are all frozen to order rather than freshly prepared in store/restaurant so this could have something to do with it.

Some of the managers in these places must be at the very least borderline simpletons.

I recall ordering a meal once with pizza, dips, sides etc and drinks. Obviously turns up sans accessories rolleyes No problem, just send it out. Oh no the manager says they can't do that. Fine, "refund it then" says I. Apparently they can't. But they can instead offer me a free side (of significantly lower value than the missing items) on my next order. rolleyes The manager could genuinely not understand why I was getting cross.

Pizza Hut use frozen dough, not sure that it's the whole pizza that is frozen.

the pizza chains takeaway offering is often poor in terms of value if you have a reasonable local independent pizza place ( although for those with 'kipper/EDL issues they might struggle to find one which is not muslamic in some parts of the country - are Italians and greeks ok for 'kippers or is is only submissive north european wives that are ok ?) , and with Pizza hut delivery only sites pales in comparision to the offering from a site which is also sit-down.

as others have pointed out they are usually franchises, there is use of frozen ingredients where sit down or indy uses fresh...

Last time I ate in a pizza hut it was really greasy and while it was edible it wasn't great.

Usually if I fancy pizza I'll get a supermarket one, Sainsburys ham mushroom and marscapone "Taste the Difference" pizza is lovely. At £5 for a 12" they're cheaper and tastier than any takeaway I've tried and cook to perfection in about 7 minutes in a combi microwave.

We've just moved house and our nearest supermarket is ASDA. 14" for £3.70, good base and a choice of toppings.

This!! The 14" meat feast is superb and made me question if I'd ever order a takeaway pizza again. It was a mistake to eat a whole one by myself however.

Our local Indian takeaway does pizzas that are far superior and far cheaper than the junk turned out by Pizza Hut and Dominos.biggrin

You must have some really crappy pizza places around you, as Asda pizzas are good, but not up to the standard of a good takeaway pizza.

Pizza takeaways can be quite variable. I live near a place that doubles as a chippy / pizza place and their pizzas are vile, but there is also a place that is really good quality, freshly made dough, fresh ingredients and cooked on a stone. I'd never bother with Dominos or Pizza Hut, Dominos can be decent value for money with all the vouchers and offers they do, and there is the nostalgia factor in that they used to sponsor The Simpsons on Sky that I used to watch religiously.

You're all doing it wrong with your fancy dan Pizza Hut and Dominos at £15 a go. What you want is a pizza crunch supper from the chippy. Half a cash and carry frozen cheese and tomato, deep fried in batter with plenty of chips.

Glaswegian kids lunchtime staple.

Yup, local takeout every time. The advantages are huge, the best being that we know them so well by now that free drinks/sides are common.
