Yes to reduce timewasters but usually only once a prospective owner has seen and decided on a pup, not beforehand as these breeders wanted. That I have never heard of before.

A non-refundable deposit can be charged when the pups are 4 weeks old. Once the buyer and breeder are happy with each other and they have seen and agreed to the contract. NOT to view pups.

I agree, charging to view is ridiculous.

At least when your puppy does arrive, that kind of puppy deposit will be the least of your worries biggrin

I was told this when I was looking at changing breed to a Large Munsterlander. She also said that I had pick of the litter, however if a person who showed dogs wanted the one I had picked they would get it and my deposit wouldn't be refunded if this happened. I was shocked, and declined this to get an abusive email having a go at wasting her time! Ended up with a brilliant breeder and sticking with a Collie.

All the discussions with the breeder when we bought our currently 16 week old Golden were as much an interview of us as potential to owners as one of us assessing her and the parents/pups.

No deposit or even mention of one. Only money that changed hands was on the day we picked Charley up.

Saw the litter at 4 weeks, met Mum and Dad and it felt like we had to get their approval too. Could have gone back to have another look but we were allowed, actually actively encouraged to go away think about it and make a family decision. No pressure, time was willingly spent on phone and in person.

We had to get him checked out by our vet at 8 weeks and if anything wrong shewould have him back with full refund.
Since then very helpful with advice on any problems.

When we went to vet we just took his pack as vet needed to see what had been done and the microchip record. Commented the pack was the best he'd ever seen and Charley was perfect.

This was from a KC accredited and inspected breeder who breeds working gundogs but also for family pets.

Earlier read the comment from someone who said they had a Golden who thought he was human. Lolled at that. Yep can see it. Bonded to this little fella better than the Lab grew up with and the terriers before that. When the Lab went so heartbroken said would never have another but here he is, asleep on my feet as I write this.

OP's breeder sounds odd, possibly got there heart in the right place but getting arsey and claiming could have sold the puppy twice over smells of a bad attitude.

Update:

After breaking comms with the slightly er, unusual, first breeder, we've just come back from a weekend away seeing some pups from another breeder smile We found them via someone with a litter we found on the KC website who'd passed us their details as had no pups left but recommended them. Have to say the overall experience was very good, great pups, lovely mum, breeder and her partner were very open, showed us all the paperwork etc, let us spend as long as we wanted with the pups, lots of advice etc etc. Deposit was £100 and although in theory non-refundable, since neither us or previous visitors had been able to choose a specific pup (they were all just as fab as each other) but the other visitors have first pick, if for some reason we return in 2 weeks time and the remaining pups are not to our liking somehow, they'll refund the deposit for us.

Overall, a very pleasant experience and we're really looking forward to collecting the little critter in 2 weeks biggrin Plus we had a Sat night out in Manchester which was, errr, amusing to see from a fashion/clothing (lack of quantity thereof) PoV hehe You guys up there really do it different from London don't you?! Either that, or I'm reeeeeally behind the times, old and crusty at 32 and need to get out more!

When we were looking for a Pug, 12 odd years ago we couldn't find available Pug puppies reasonably locally however a very reputable local breeder who's male stud had fathered a litter where there were available puppies, put us in touch with the breeder of these available puppies who was based in Wales; we are Surrey.

He asked us what we were after; show dog or pet, male or female etc and suggested that he chose one based on our circumstances and requirments and he would be happy to deliver the dog to us for £10, if he arrived and we weren't happy he would turn around and go back home, no questions asked.

He turned up with his daughters and the dog, we were happy and we paid £500 in cash, we hadn't previously paid any deposit, there were supporting papers as to the pedigree and these papers supported that the original breeders dog was the father, the whole thing was done on trust.

Probably completely the wrong way to purchase a dog however it worked for us and we had 11 fantastic years with him.

Yes it was completely wrong (classic puppy farm tactic) but it still happens a lot sadly even though people are made more aware of it. Sounds like you had a good un all the same smile

Wow, what a rude unfriendly breeder! I'm far from a seasoned dog owner but that would make me run a mile. I was lucky when I got Vinnie, the breeder was lovely, went and played with the pups for a good hour or so, chatted, discussed what kinda lifestyle he'd have etc. Answered any questions I had, and put no pressure on me to take a dog at all. The dogs were ready to leave so I took one there and then, he was microchipped and bundled into the back of my mates focus with me and we've been inseparable ever since biggrin

Thread resurrection!

Thought I'd gratuitously post a few pics of the little guy now that we've had him 3 weeks or so smile He's good as gold, almost vaccinated to go outside, only poops etc on the newspaper we put out, now sleeps fine on his own in the puppy pen in the lounge, LOVES meeting new people and never really chews anything he's not supposed to....all going well so far! In 3.5 weeks he's gone from about 6kg to 11kg, greedy little bar-steward hehe

Pup and mum on collection day

In the 993 on the way home!

Outside "walk" for the first time, very scared!

"No wanna mummy!"

A *very* big hit with the girls at the vet's!

He likes going to the vet's!

Little man sleeping on daddy sleeping on mummy

Very useful working from home companion....!

Back at the vet's again 10 days later rather bigger!

Looks adorable.

I still can't quite get used to the tails. But soon it will be the norm.

Is it illegal now to dock tails? I only ask as I saw a very young dog recently with a docked tail, which made me wonder.

I think it is unless they're genuinely going to be a working dog i.e. you can't do it for cosmetic reasons....I think

Yes, working dogs can be docked. Otherwise medical reasons only.

Public forum and ladies can't resist a man with a cute puppy AND and awesome Movember 'tache so I block my eyes out SAS style so they don't find out who I am and come knocking at all hours, my gf doesn't like it.

wink

The Pup looks fantastic, fantastic dogs.

We got our Rottie from Westlodge in Cumbria, lots of good things said about them by other breeders and it was a very simple process to go through.

Chatted on the phone, had questions fired at me, I had ones for them and arranged to go and see the litter.

Then when viewing I was told of 2 (from memory) that had already been chosen, I then played with them and waited to see who came up to me and that's how we chose Flash, we already had the name and this dog had a flash of white on his chest. Deposit paid after they went through the details with me and I collected him a few weeks later.

Take lots of pictures, Flash is now 7 months 3 weeks and weighs 35 kilos despite us keeping him trim. The character comes out and he has already bravely protected me from a bin in the dark and shown his dominance when 2 other dogs were jumping up at me when I had my little boy on my chest. Not the best behaved dog in the world definitely but no real trouble and knows his place.

Couldn't imagine a home without one now.

ENJOY!

Dave!
