Afternoon all.

Very interested in a drastic career change and the idea of getting into offshore oil production really appeals to me. Don't have much of a technical background, I did do a City & Guilds in CNC Operation many years ago, but I've mostly worked in Sales since. If it helps at all I have a BSc Business degree so a high degree of numeracy.

I understand working in a refinery or similar is a better trodden path into this but since I don't live anywhere near a refinery and am aiming to go offshore in the long run I'm hoping to get straight into the offshore market first and work my way up from there.

Not shy of a hard days' work and going in as a roustabout, and realise this will mean putting myself through MIST, BOSIET etc. Also been looking at the introductory courses Petrofac offer after a recommendation from someone in the industry, but they are a lot to shell out if it doesn't lead to anything!

Interested in hearing anyone's thoughts on what my chances are of getting a start and moving my career in this direction, being already in my 30s without relevant offshore experience or qualifications. Or anything else I can do in the mean time to improve my chances.

Thanks in advance

to be blunt you have very little/no chance ,

IF you do an open learning course by opito in production operations it MAY help your chances

but really you either need experience in petrochemical process operations , OR/and someone already in the game who can help you.

No chance of getting straight into the production side or no chance of getting a start at all?

No chance straight into production , you will need some experience first and better with the opito training too

good luck

Thanks dingg.
In that case I guess it's back to the more usual thread of getting my first few trips offshore with anyone doing anything to build up experience!

All hints, tips, gloom and job offers gratefully accepted.

If thats the case I suggest you get through your BOSIET/MIST and a relevant course, Riggin etc. CV to as many companies in Aberdeen as possible. If you can go there and knock on doors also.

There are literally hundreds of guys working offshore and have been for a while that would love to move in to Production, but will never get the chance for one reason or another. It is a pretty closed shop up here to be fair.

Maybe think of an alternative route. I know plenty people in downstream oil and gas that are struggling to get a Production Techs job Offshore, with years of experience in the industry, but as they have no offshore experience then they just aren't getting the breaks.

ETA:- You may be better posting in the Scotland forum as there are loads of guys in there who work offshore in various capacities.
