Newbie on PH forums but observed for ages. Have had a 94 C4 for just coming up to 11 years. Never driven a modern version but love mine, I don't understand why the C4 is so unloved generally! I drive many new/modern cars, yes the ride and 'bit of a handful' handling(Z07 option)wobbly chassis make things a challenge but I would happily drive my vet every day over the boring stuff
I had a 1985 Vette TPI from 1994 to 1887 as a daily driver and I absolutely loved it and bonded with it more than almost any other car I owned.
I think the main issue was that it creaked and rattled a lot and wasn't very well built 9although compared to a TVR, it was just fine).
Only the CSA prised mine from me.
Still love them.
I had a C5 Z06 and it was far less fun because it was far more capable. Fun is totally under-rated over outright ability.
I think Clarkson got it right when comparing the C6 ZR1 with the Audi R8 V10 - the Audi was antiseptically the better car, hands down but the Vette was broadband smile material.

I've got a 95 and had an 86 - both great cars, unique to drive and still puts a huge smile on my face when I take it out. 95 is a manual too which is a different experience to the auto.
Surprised about the handling being a bit nervous, although the 95 is a base suspension car (that is significantly more grown up than the earlier cars, less squeaks and rattles, but I wouldn't say either were better or worse as a driving/living experience), neither have/had bad manners, on or off the limit.
Why are they unloved? As a short answer:
- Too eighties for the classic car lovers who go up to the C3 generation.
- Not as modern or as high performance as the later generations
- Electrical gremlins are a bit of an irritation if you're paying someone else to fix them
