I have been offered a rocking horse poo rare Toyota Tercel for scrap money. woohoo

The Tercel and I have a bit of history. When I was a teen I spent my Summer holidays working on a local farm (remember when British people used to be willing to do that?)and the farmer had three vehicles just sat in a barn. A Subaru Brat, Panda 4x4 (that I eventually bought from him) and a gold Tercel. We'd often take it in turns to drive these cars around the farm loaded with hay bales and other stuff as it was a bit of a walk otherwise. I always liked the Tercel but bought the Panda as I knew I wouldn't have been able to insure the exotic six speed wagon as it was a 1.5 engine.

When I was older and an insurable age I went back to find it had been scrapped along with the Brat after a foreign worker crashed one into the other. rolleyes

There was a red Tercel for sale in the next village but it had Celica GT4 running gear and was pretty stupid to try and insure (even though it was still 1.5 on the log book). rolleyes

Ten years later and earlier this year I needed to get some work done I couldn't do myself. Found the right chap for the job and dropped the parts round. While I was waiting I noticed a very familiar shape in the middle of a hedge (that turned out to be a weed patch). A few minutes with a machete later and I uncovered this...

...beast. wink

Even though there isn't a Toyota page does anyone here know about the Tercel 4WD and can offer any advice or tips. Despite being rare parts appear to be easy to come by, classic insurance, sub-1.6 £145 a year Tax bracket and probably the most practical classic out there. smile

there's a couple of Tercel fans over on Retro Rides, might be worth announcing yourself there?

I imagine it shares a lot of parts with the Carib (basically a 4wd Corolla wagon, still reasonably common here in NZ), and with the regular Corolla for that matter.

I'd still prefer a Subaru Leone personally mind you...

Scrap prices have bottomed out to £40 per Ton so he's sitting on the car for now. Would have made a much better Winter runner than my Alfa GTV. hehe

I'll pop round and see him later or tomorrow to make sure the old girl is still there.

I want to drive the car from New York (near Coningsby Lincolnshire) to California (Norfolk) as a homage to Need 4 Speed by the time the bloody sequel comes out. wink
