I've just bought an Evoque Si4 Prestige and need some roof bars for a roof box or ski carrier, but it doesn't have the factory rails fitted.

I've spoken to the LR dealer where I bought the car, who say I need to buy the OEM rails, then the cross bars and the cost is somewhere in the region of £800 for the whole lot, which is insane.

Thule list a cross bar only option for cars without rails, but looking at where the mount points are on the car I'm not sure how this works as the bars will be so far apart I'm not sure the box will fit between them.

Any pointers or ideas?

I can help, I have exactly that, even the pano roof. Thule aero bars, with the appropriate legs and rubber feet. The rubber feet sit on the paintwork and then a clamp tucks under the roof and into the recess above the door (if you get what I mean). Hopefully yours is a 5 door, because they don't fit on a 3 door (because there isn't a rear door!).

I use mine for a roof box mainly (and sometimes for some long things), so sure you won't have any issues. Just need to make sure that the paintwork and rubber feet are cleaned well before putting them on (obvious I suppose, but worth mentioning). Having put mine on maybe half a dozen times, can't see any issues with the paintwork.

I have the exact details of how far apart the bars should sit in the car, so if you really need that, then let me know.

Ah, that makes sense. I was picturing them fixing to the rail mounts!

Yes, mine is a 5 door, so no issues there. I've found a UK dealer who will sell the rails for £250 including fitting, which is a significant improvement on the CHF900 I was quilted by my local dealer, so I may go for that and use the cross bars from my old car.
