What is going on is there are hundreds of these large trucks in London which are removing the spoils from the Cross Rail project, coupled with many untrained cyclists going up the inside of said vehicles while turning left; 'tis a recipe for disaster.

Not saying this is what happened in this instance, but is highly likely considering no one has been arrested so far.

Wishing for a complete recovery for the girl involved.

Sadly what's going on is: some cyclists are really, really dumb.

I hope she makes a full recovery.

I'm not sure dumb is the right word, but many do seem to be completely unaware of their vulnerability.

Wishing her a full recovery.

How do we know it wasnt the other way around and the tipper was passing a cyclist?
Or is that already decided by lack of arrests?

I've had a coach do similar to me; both of us turning left. Fortunately there were no barriers so I could get off the road quick enough to avoid the same fate as this cyclist.

Not sure that knowledge that I am squishy made any difference in my case.

I assumed something serious had happened yesterday. I work just off Fleet Street, which was closed for most of the afternoon. Spotted the tipper on my way to lunch and on the way back.

We don't is the simple answer. However, I see every day god knows how many cyclists continue to squeeze down the side of indicating buses and lorries at junctions and IMHO the cyclist needs to have some common sense and realise that if the lorry turns they're squished. Even if the lorry is not indicating it's still a stupid thing to do - wait until after the junction if you want to get past! I'm not saying it's always the cyclists fault but people do need to think.

NO NO NO NO NO Why Educate the cyclists, when if they are that dumb that they cannot realise them verses car/bus/lorry they wont win.

Yep! there are stupid cyclists but these lorries are driven by maniacs. They frighten me, even when I am in my 2 ton car. The Highway out to the Isle of Dogs is full of them and even if I am making good progress on my motorbike, a lot of these tipper trucks do a good job of catching up and I'm ex courier fast/mad biggrin

In almost all cases they are driven aggressively and too fast for the conditions. Situations when a pedestrian may step out into the road and a car or bike can slow down to minimise or avoid injury are very risky when these lorries involved as they take a lot longer to slow down and stop.

They need to look into the training of these drivers as it must be completely different to other large HGVs who by and large are driven very professionally.

(Actually the training must be the same , so why are Tipper lorries driven so badly?)

Cyclists shouldn't turn on the inside of a truck regardless of how its being driven though.

Hence why I said there are stupid cyclists. It's just the fact that yet another Tipper lorry is involved and many of them are badly driven. But probably not in this case.

There is a well known firm of Tipper trucks around here which are all driven aggressively by drivers you wouldn't want to argue with. They look like they all come from the same extended family.

You wouldn't want to mess with them.

There is a substantial amount of cyclist/lorry matter in the driver CPC course I completed recently.

The amount of cyclists who are not aware of how big the blind spots are on lorries is shocking.

Squeezing alongside a lorry is a recipe for disaster - usually with a sad end for the cyclist and a major burden for the lorry driver to carry. frown

That's not a tipper lorry full of spoil. It's a large skip, typically used for metal or anything but soil/muck/spoil.

Never mind Cross Rail, there's plenty of other large construction projects which materials brought in and waste taken out via such lorries.

The lorries need soft foam arms that pop out or shoot out biodegradable silly string to remind people not to come up the inside

So the cyclist risks riding up the inside of the lorry to get a few feet in front, but everyone wants tighter controls on the lorry drivers training??

And the government wonder why there is a shortage of drivers coming in to the industry, when they run the risk of this sort of idiocy everyday whilst trying to earn a living.

And please do enlighten me as to another job where you pay \£3000+ for the licence then have more training on top, to then do something as simple as to run over your allotted drive time by 5 mins looking for somewhere to park and Vosa will kindly rape you for a few hundred pounds, so you ve worked a few days for nothing.
