Why do people queue at petrol stations?

Seriously, why? You know the ones, petrols station is busy and yet some complete mong, rather than just finding a pump to sit behind, sits in the entrance to the fuel station waiting for the next free pump. Twice today I've driven round these f
king idiots and waited at a pump to fuel up. No grief, just full on stares (powerfully built fridge thrower and all that) but I just cannot understand people sometimes, just fking get on with it!

Personally I'm interested to know how he's filled up twice in one day, but I drive a diesel so only fill up every other month.
I don't understand why people queue for ages to have the pump on the correct side of their car. If the only free pumps or on the wrong side for my car, I just reverse in instead. The tutting and headshaking I receive by the people queuing just makes me laugh, as i've filled up an paid before they've even got to the pump they're waiting for

That is massively different from someone waiting for the next available pump to come up with. The chap is talking about running in front of someone in a queue. It's scummy behaviour.On the other hand, the local Sainsburys has Super Unleaded pumps at the back of the line of three, recently when half the pumps were closed and somebody pulled away to leave a whole row free I pulled over to the side and waved people past... nothing. I hopped out, pointed to the super sign and called out "I need Super Unleaded, anybody else need diesel or regular unleaded?".... nothing, and a horn beep from somewhere. So I drove forward and had to block two pumps :/

No, it really isn't. The "scummy behaviour" comes from the person who - rather than risk taking an extra minute by queueing for one particular pump - decides to hold the entire petrol station - and, often, the road - up by dithering and waiting for the first pump to come free.It's like expecting the entire supermarket to wait behind you rather than pick a checkout.
It's scummy-onna-stick when combined with refusing to use a LH pump because you've got a RH filler cap.

The hoses reach to the other side of the car if you park close enough. So i dont really care which side the pump is at. I just hold the hose so it doesnt actually touch the car I'm with the OP. Queue for each pump individually, not the whole station: That's just common sense.
More often than not that causes the entire entrance to be blocked as well, so those folks that just want to pop in for a loaf of bread and a pint of milk (let's not get started on that one, though!) can't even get in either. It's a guaranteed urine temperature raiser.

The problem with queuing for specific pumps is you can end up stuck behind someone for 10-15 minutes while the next few cars that came in behind you have filled up paid and gone already. Becomes more and more of a problem as petrol stations turn into cafes and mini super markets
Most petrol stations have stacks of room behind the pumps, so unless they're really busy there is plenty of room for 4-5+ cars to be queued far enough back that they can go to any pump, but it just takes a small % of people to always insist on individual queues for pumps and just barge straight past a queue set back from the pumps to make it unworkable unless you get an attendant managing the queue, which has started to make a bit of a comeback i've noticed

Didn't they realise that your journey was far, far more important than theirs?

Perhaps you did not read the OP's post. Our Morrisons station sits on the main road into the supermarket and 20 yards from the roundabout. Idiots that park their car at the entrance to the forecourt and sit there waiting for an empty spot cause a backlog down the road and around the roundabout. Holds up everyone and not just petrol station users. And very often there is only 1 car waiting for any pump but the stupid pillock sits there for one to be completely free. Loads of space to queue behind.
I'll happily go around them and toot - usually get a blank stare. Grinds my gears ...
And the numpties who have not worked out how to use pay at the pump but insist on queueing for 5 mins inside. Is it really that hard? An no, they don't normally buy stuff.

I've never had a problem getting a hose to reach the other side of a car. As above, just hold the pipe away from the paintwork.ymwoods said:

Quite, there's an Esso station in High Wycombe that often causes queues back on to a busy roundabout because of drivers not being prepared to take a gamble on which pump will fall vacant first. I blame petrol stations for being demi-supermarkets which tempt people to block the fuel aisles while they buy groceries.What is the massive's view on driving around a stationary car at pump one in a pair to use the pump in front that has been vacated first?

I'm with the OP on this one. The petrol station near me is terrible for people holding back and hovering near the entrance. This causes queues to build up on the road. They're always waiting for a pump on the 'correct side' as well without realising that they have extra long hoses that work either side.
It would work so much more efficiently if people just queued for a pump... By hovering around the entrance you're not queuing as far as I'm concerned. I would, however, only drive around the ditherer rather than the queue that forms behind them.
