PH'ers......

Currently living/working in the states and about to pull the trigger on a Cummins Ram 2500 or GM Duramax 2500, both crew cab and short box - new/stock in all respects.

I am reading as much info as possible in the IVA manual and intro to type approval document but am a bit confused by it all.

I have HGV 1, the truck will weigh approx 4500kg according to the sticker I looked at today on a test drive.

I would love to IVA it as painlessly as possible but do not wish to be restricted by use in the future, I harbour dreams of running my own business and could envisage wanting to utilise the truck. However, upon initial import and registration it will be a 'personal import' and only private use.

I am serving HM forces and therefore qualify to import a vehicle exempt from duty and VAT (over 12 months here, will have owned 6 months here, intend to keep more than 12 months UK).

How do I import it, IVA, and keep my tax free allowance? With the caveat that maybe 12 months down the line I may be wanting to use the vehicle for my business use? Can I still do this if I voluntarily test is as M1? (less than 40% bed - is this still possible?) Can I register it as a medium truck but still be VAT free due to personal use?

Please help, I was grinning ear to ear on the test drives today! The new GM variants waft you silently on a wave of never ending torque! Addicted!!!

Any help appreciated. I know there are professionals on here whose opinion I would gratefully receive.

Many many thanks......
Ritch.

You really need to speak to one of the specialist importers, who will be best placed to advise you.

I imported my truck with Golden Chariots.

John Kuhlin there will be able to help you.

As Adam said, or speak to Pete Jordan http://www.jrjcustom.com/content/services he's done plenty of heavier trucks.
