Chaps (and lady chaps),

I am appealing for your expertise in planning a little road trip next year. My dad and I so enjoyed our little jaunt to Monza in 2012 that we're going to repeat but this time we're off to the Rechberg Hillclimb in Austria. It's in April so we're not expecting to be able to do a vast litany of high passes but hope that we can find some cool roads nevertheless.

Very briefly: we're considering a Hull - Zeebrugge ferry and then cruising down through Germany, taking in a couple of places we missed out on during the last trip. I believe the Tour Auto will be taking place the week after the Rechberg so we may try to catch a stage / race of that somewhere on the way back like Dijon but otherwise we're free agents and happy to head wherever is fun.

So, where would you recommend? We'll be in the old man's V8 Vantage rather than my old Exige so happy to spend the odd hour at three figures on an autobahn if it helps us get somewhere awesome. Bonus points for motor racing-related activities en route.

Thanks in advance!

Andy (and Bill - though he doesn't 'do' forums)

If you're looking for somewhere nice to stay for an evening, I can highly recommend the Hotel Montana in St. Anton http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g608676-...
Stayed there for 1 night during our Europe road trip in 2012.

Looks like Rechberg is in the East so can easily avoid the mountains and have a nice jaunt down through the black forsest.Anywhere much over 700 metres will still have snow in April in the Alps, and most passes, unless they access ski resorts will be closed still.
Lots of fun roads to be had though... :-)

Thanks so much, chaps - really appreciate it. I'm about to head out to Texas for the US GP so I've forwarded the suggestions to the old man and told him to get the atlas open smile

Can't help you with great driving roads as I'm always in the lorry, but maybe on your route home you could go via Munich as the BMW museum and BMW world are well worth a visit.
From Munich nip over to Stuttgart and do Porsche and Mercedes, hvn't been myself yet but have read on here both are well worth a visit, then from Stuttgart head upto Heilbronn and then cut across towards Hockenheim, (could be something on???) but on the way across you MUST stop and visit the museum at Sinsheim smile You will see it from the motorway as you can't miss the planes. There is also a fantastic collection of cars there as well as motorbikes, army stuff, trains etc, its fantastic and you could lose a day there smile

Boring lorry driver bit=If you and your dad get hungry on the roads of Germany the services are ok, but if you look for the 'autohof' signs at motorway exits most are very good truckstops/restaraunts that normally have really good quality food at a reasonable price, and normally freshly cooked. Always well signed and normally less than 2km from the motorway,
hth.

Should have said that Stuttgart to Sinsheim obvioulsly doesn't fit in with Dijon.

I've done a similar-isn run a couple of times recently.

Kind of vaguely went:

Eiffel Mountains (via Spa), Nurburgring, Rhine Valley, Black Forest (Take in the Schramberg museum), then into Austria, trying to avoid Lake Constance, as it's a tourist ridden hell-hole with major traffic issues.

We've also taken a route that went from the Rhine to Hockenheim and Stuttgart before heading into Tyrol.
