Hi

I'm looking to get a second hand S5 in the next few weeks and I'm doing the usual classified trawling at the moment to get a feel for the pricing, specs etc. I've noticed quite a major a difference on the interior switch layout but can't work out what this means (e.g. is one of the photo's part of a wider upgrade option?). I've compared manual to auto, new to old etc and can't find a logical reason (i.e. I've seen both on the manual (but only the first layout on autos), I've seen both layouts on various ages ... I'm stumped.

This one has the main control button just behind the gearstick.

This one has a very basic layout around the gearstick and all the controls around the CD slot.

Does anyone know the reason why?

Thanks

Ed

It's the MMI controller isn't it?

Multimedia Interface. Controls the sat nav/computer.

Exactly that. The bottom one is the standard radio (notice the lack of a 'NAV' button), the top has navigation.

Thanks both. I assumed the button in the middle of the bottom picture was the MMI button but obviously not. Thanks for your help.

The bottom one seems a strange spec, no heated seats but it has memory seats?

Yep, but its the same interface on both, just different locations for the controller.

Whichever one you get, check out that grey trim around the screen and dials. It was a major source of rattles on my old A5, that and other issues were the reason I off-loaded it in the end.

I've seen both configuration on A4s. My suspicion is that they put the MMI controls in the dash if there's no CD player or similar in that slot.

My car has them round the gearstick, and they all fall easily to hand and can be operated without looking down or stretching.

I'd avoid cars with them in the dash, as I think it would be distracting trying to use them while driving - The same reason I dislike touchscreen systems.

The basic Audi Symphony CD player keeps the interface controls under the CD player, alongside the SD slots. Any additional options regarding sat nav or audio moves them

Even simpler than that:

Cars with nav have MMI on the centre console.

Cars without nav have 'infotainment' on the dash.
