Seen a few TV adverts for the MOBO awards. Music Of Black Origin apparently.

It irritates me a bit to be honest. Well, quite a lot in fact. In an age where we think before we speak to avoid saying anything that can be construed as prejudiced, racist, inflammatory or even slightly biased it's seemingly OK to identify and reward people whose musical roots are 'black'

If there was a MOWO for example then can you seriously imagine the furore that would surround? To ringfence music that originated from white people would be ridiculous.

Why does this MOBO award need to exist? We are all equal beings be we black, white, disabled etc etc are we not? So why do the black community who have fought for years and years to overcome racism allow themselves to be separated once more and viewed as a colour?

Music Of Black Origin - it's a statement of fact, not a derogatory statement to a particular group of people.

The MOBOs gave, and continue to give, non-white artists a chance to be recognised for their achievements when the majority of the top musicians were, and had been for years, white. As such, it should be celebrated, not criticised as some anti-white protest.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but if there is one area where the black community is more than adequately represented, it is popular music

Never mind all that, I'm going to do a parade round Manchester called "Straight Pride". Everyone is welcome from any colour or creed and I want you to wear your most flamboyant straight clothes - I'm thinking jeans and a polo shirt here. Maybe a jacket or coat if it's cold.

We'll have a chant and everything "I'm straight, it's great, I don't want to be late" or something like that.

As artists yes, but not in any other capacity. It's still generally an industry controlled by white males. I think that's one of the key drives of MOBO.

I think white artists can win and have won awards at MOBO.

Oh, OP. Look around and see what company you're in when asking this question.

Either way, feel free to regale us with a list of acts or genres you'd like to see represented at the MOWOs.

Because of inequality. To be honest, you sound so stuck in a mindset from the 20s that you wouldnt really get it if it was laid out in white only.

If you have to think before you speak it shows you have a mindset and viewpoint that you know will make more than a few faux pas, so you're hiding what you're actually thinking. Which reinforces the point that there needs to be more awareness and education, something that the MOBOs will probably give you.

surely there is no such thing any more as music of purely black origin, any more than there is music of white origin, as everything has been influenced by the other so much down the years that it is all a bit fatuous to claim otherwise.

No issue of course with getting more people involved with the non performing side of things if there is a demographic imbalance, but I wouldn't know about the industry myself.

Sorry but that finest statement is racist. The awards are for the music and not for "non-white" artists. They have often been won my white artists and no-one cares, as it's not about race but music that often wasn't as high profile in the past.

We don't get the same bhing about the folk awards or country music so I guess the title is rather misleading.
