Mac Disk Utility hangs when erasing/partitioning

I'm trying to erase/partition a new 512GB SSD that arrived today. But every time I try to erase or partition it, the progress bar hangs at half way after a few secs and nothing further happens. If it's an erase I'm doing, the time remaining sits at '1 min' for about 5 minutes, then slowly ticks up with nothing further happening.

Any ideas? I just need to get it formatted so I can clone another drive onto it using Super Duper. I've done it half a dozen times before but have never had this problem

Not much else it can be other than a bad drive or bad caddy/cable. Got another machine you can test it on?

Not really, and I've actually connected the SSD internally as well. Oh well, will keep trying

Try using disk utility on another drive. If it works on the other drive then your ssd may be faulty
