I'm currently toying with the idea of a fast 4x4. Budget around £10k - £12k. I know from the start a 4x4 maybe compromised but I just like them and could do with the space.
I'm not too worried about running costs or fuel so have been looking at Cayenne Turbos. I've seen a nice 2004 model and am planning to have a look at it next week.
Now my question is, in the scheme of things, how well does a Cayenne Turbo with air suspension handle when compared to vehicles of a similar ilk? I've previousy owned an L322 FFRR which was quite wallowy. I've heard that the Cayenne and BMW X5 are a lot more car like to drive with less body roll. Is this true?

The x5 and cayenne tend to handle the best out of the 4x4s, yes they're worse off road than land rovers but having had two X5s, a Q7 and an X6 I've never found it an issue. They're far less rolly than range rovers.
I bought mine because I like them, it's how I choose cars. I don't need the size or the 4x4ness and I'm sure a fast estate car would be "better" but I could get by just fine with a focus too.
Try them, if you like them buy one!

Speed addicted, thanks for your input. I like my cars and just like SUVs. I have previously had an Audi S6 with the V10 5.2 engine and that was amazing. I wouldn't mind having another but they seem to be holding their value somewhat. An S8 could be another option.
I just like the thought of having an SUV that can get off the line just as fast as a hot hatch or a sports car. I think I'll give the Cayenne a test drive next week.

Off road it isn't as versatile as the Discovery but on the tarmac it's a clear winner on speed and handling.
OP - I used to own a Cayenne Turbo on an 04 plate for about a year. I have to say, at the time I was blown away with the way it handled and general performance, especially with the air suspension. I actually came from an older X5 before and it felt night and day different.
The Cayenne really did define physics especially with it's mass, however that was down side for me. The lack of stopping power. Stopping over two tones quickly was always going to be an issue if you were hustling along.
Also the constant oil and petrol consumption did my head in also..

I'm pretty sure I saw a red Volvo 850R in the classifieds. Or you could snap up something similar but newer. As others have said, why do you want 4x4 if you're never going to take it off road? Why bother with potentially extra maintenance/repair costs? If you're worried about having 4x4 in the winter just get some decent tyres on an estate instead?
This inexplicable reason that 4x4s are somehow better annoys me and what annoys me even more is it is a marketing trick that worked... very well.
Plus there are some decent estate cars that have 4x4 anyway...

I understand that the OP is after a 4x4 for some reason. But the OP also wants a car that doesn't have body roll yet is looking at buying vehicles like a Cayenne or an X5. All the engineering in the world can't beat physics and the engineering solutions that are in place to combat body roll are surely ridiculously expensive options? Why not get a C63 AMG or similar if he's not concerned about running costs?? Just my two pence.
My RRS has active roll control which uses some sort of electronic wizardry to help prevent roll. It doesn't stop it but it does seem to do a pretty good job.
They are nice to drive around in though and I can see why the OP wanted one but it is no sports car. You can hustle them when required but you need to be aware of the size and weight of them as they will have quite a bit of momentum.

He just said he fancied one.
I prefer them as a daily driver as they are much more relaxing to drive when you just want to waft around.
Yeah they cost more to fuel and they have more to go wrong than a family eurbox estate, but I don't care, a small price to pay to be in a car I want to be in.
My guess is you're someone who hasn't even hit is 30s yet, and every car journey has to be like a rally, if it isn't rock hard suspension and a stripped out interior that feels raw then why bother?
Sometimes having a a big luxury barge is nice, and a 4x4 definitely gives you a much more relaxing feel to driving which appeals to many.
I never thought I would own one, but with a young son, a teenage daughter a large dog and all the crap that goes with it I bought one as a second car, I din't have to worry about my sport touring or M3 going down the dirt tracks and getting muddy bikes thrown in the back, and being a second car I still had a 'toy'.
I could now live without any of the 'toys' but would hate to not own a 4x4.
I just to be as insular and ignorant as many one here about 4x4's, look at my snipes from a few years ago, but I tried one, and now looking back I feel I was a bit of an ignorant
