Hello!

I purchased a property in harrogate 18 months ago and i am looking for some advice on a potential building project that we are looking at having done.

The house is over 200 years old and is a "non standard" configuration having the living areas on the 1st floor and bedrooms on the ground

This is the view from the rear courtyard. The first floor windows have a Juliet balcony constructed of glass.

What we are looking at having done is having a small balcony (80 - 90cm deep) giving access to the garden / courtyard via a staircase. Not sure how best this would work hung vs propped

The style of the staircase we think that will work best is a "center stringer" up the right hand wall. Although we don't own this property

We are looking for advise on if this is possible, estimated costs etc prior to approaching people. Also if there is anyone in the North / Yorkshire area who can do this work then please be in touch.

Have you ever been on decking in Spring? I'd seriously consider whether wood is a suitable material for an external staircase.

Hello!

Thanks for the advice. Not decided on what we are going to have the treads made out of. We were thinking of a wood looking composite

I'm sure you'll need a handrail and balustrade to meet any regs. How about a spiral one?

We did think about a spiral but it would take too much room up and it would have to go on the left hand side which wouldn't be able due to neighbours and overlooking

A spine staircase will need a concrete pad in the ground, and could then be self supporting. However, as mentioned, building control will want a look, and it will need to be enclosed . Maybe in glass ? Would look pretty cool methinks.
