I am considering buying a car from an auction without a V5 - a main dealer PX and I understand that it is currently going through the cherished transfer process.

Am I right in thinking that I will be able to tax the car online without the V5? Does the new tax disc-less system actually make it easier to tax and use a car bought without a V5?

Or will I have to wait for the logbook to come through (or apply for a new one) before I can tax it?

Greatly appreciate any info re: taxing as if I am unable to tax the car on purchase it will greatly put me off buying it.

It's exactly the same as before, except you don't get a piece of paper in the post.

You haven't taken the V5C with a purchase for a decade now. You should be given the new keeper slip.

Have you got the new keeper slip? Use that to tax it online or at the PO.
Not got the new keeper slip? Nope, can't do anything until you get the V5C, either "naturally" or via a V62.

Many thanks for the reply, can I just confirm if I can get the road tax at the same time as applying for the new V5 with the V62 or will I have to send off the V62 and then wait for a new V5 before I can tax the car? It could mean that I can't use the car for a few weeks. Thanks again.

If you are not the registered keeper of the vehicle you may not be able to tax until you get a V5C in your name.

It depends, if the online status says "this vehicle can be taxed at a post office without the V5/C" (in otherwords, it is in "trade" status) then yes - you can fill in a V62 and tax it at a post office all at the same time.

If you have the [edit: "V62" removed] "new keeper slip" (and specifically the reference number thereon if seeking to do this online wink ), then you can 'tax' it from the start of the current month online or at any PO...

As there is no physical piece of paper sent out as a "tax disc" by DVLA nowadays, it doesn't matter if your address (as new RK) isn't on the V5C (as RK) if doing this online; a visit to a PO should be equally painless...

I'm about to buy a car today with no log book. If I tax it when the car isn't in my name, if I sell it in a month or so (when the log book turns up), I won't get the tax refunded to me will I?

Strangely enough, DVLA will send the refund to the person legally responsible for the car.

I will register it in my name, that's not easy with no V5. I need to apply for one, wanted to know if I can tax it while I wait for it to turn up. Just read on the V62 form you can't

Yes, it is. V62 and £25.
