Mrs Powerstans has passed her MOD 2 and started to look for her first big bike, well having started with the usual culprits of Fazer etc she has suddenly upped her budget and is going to test ride a mark 1 street tripple (It looks really nice in red apparently!!!).

Having looked quickly at autotrader it appears I can get private sale 2007 to 2009 models with 10K on the clock for £3,500, usually with history and some parts, trade seems steeper as £4,000 plus with 20K on the clock for a 2009 model appearing nearer the norm.

Well what to look out for apart from the usual HPI check, crash damage and finance checks?

Also is £3,500 relistic, as I remember in 2007 the street was circa £5,000. This means about £1,500 (plus extras) depreciation over 5 to 7 years. That would suggest £3,500 is actually good residual for a bike.

Cheers

CORROSION. I am going to shout it again CORROSION, check the inner tubes on the forks for pitting...if you fail to and its rusted its £500 to fix. Early 675's are notoriously bad for rust if not treated. That's why they painted the engine casing on the Daytona on later models. I spent countless hours polishing mines and it was a balls ache due to this.

Valve clearances need done at 11k mark so make sure that's be done.

reg/rec was on Daytona not sure about street but not a worry.

Anything with aftermarket cans is a huge plus as the originals are heavy as fk and st.

other than that, usual signs.

"Street Tripple what to look out for" - you could start with looking out for that hideous, loud, ridiculous, high-pitched engine whine which means you can always tell a modern Triumph approaching even when it's round a corner wink

(Sorry, pet hate of mine and the one reason I could never own a Triumph!)

A few examples managed to escape Hinkley with an additional, surplus P in the name. Worth looking out for.

Those must be the knock-offs. He wants an original from the Hinckley factory. wink

Inner tubes? Do you have some very rare air forks?

My Street is doused in ACF50, as all bikes should be.

Have a good look at the tail area if it has an R&G tail tidy on it. Two friends of mine have had their R&G tail tidies (one was the first-gen metal one, the other was the later plastic version) crack. The metal one fell in the back wheel while he was moving (slowly, luckily), and the plastic one just started showing enormous cracks across the underside of undertray bit.

ACF Autumnal coat awaiting to be applied to my CB1300 so I know who will be cleaning and treating Mrs Powerstans at the same time.

Rectifier recall and watch out for the dreaded pitting then.

Any one know how much the valve clearance service is as lots of bikes at about 10k to 12k milage up for sale!

It's at 12,000 miles and expect to pay about £550 from a Triumph dealer for it. Jack Lilley's in Romford did my friend's recently and forgot to do the rocker cover up properly, leading to a nice oil leak all the way to the south of France…). £550 well spent…

(I've had a Street Triple too and didn't have any problems with it, other than attempted theft!)

That is what they are called by many manufactures for upside down forks.

I got one 2 weeks ago. 4k got me a 2010 R model with 10k on the clock. Tail tidy, cans and a higher screen were the mods it came with. Not minty mint but excellent condition (minty mint not a big issue for me as I will be using it year round)

The ones I viewed at less then 4k were quite scruffy! I didn't realise the valve service was so expensive but then I won't be using the main dealers! As someone has already said, be wary of tail tidys. Mine came with an r&g which I'm not a fan of. I want to change it but need a rear light surround.

My minty mint, low mileage 10 reg with the various Triumph extra bits was under £ 4k early this year. Widely considered a bargain. Superb road bike -with a shock swap and reduced rising rate linkage.

Cheers everyone, just got a quote for Mrs Powerstans and I was impressed obviously being slightly north of 40, living in the suburbs and with a garage helps but newley qualified the quote was £200 fully comp for 3000 miles including commuting!

Mine was £1200 full comp as a new rider in a fairly good postcode back when I was 24 – maybe getting old isn't such a bad thing…

Only other think i can add, is mine had an awful rattle when cold from the cam tensioner.

Normally they're noisy then it calms down after 30 seconds or so but mine didn't, but got it fixed for free at it's service.

And as MTB says, corrosion, mine was well protected with ACF50 and even after 3 months it was showing the signs of it.

Other than that, loved mine. I also went for Akrapovic pipes instead of the usual Arrows, much nicer!

I have a 60 plate street triple R, with 9K miles, arrows lowboy exhaust system (plus standard exhaust) and all the extra plastics in Matt grey. Full triumph service history. ASV levers.

I'd let it go for 4k, as per the above poster. If its something your interested in, I can send pictures. I never ride it anymore, I only do Trackdays on my Trackbike.
