Hi smile

I've been tasked by a friend with finding a fun 'investment' Ferrari. I use investment lightly as i reckon reckon classic cars are more gambling then anything at these levels. Budget max 200k. I know nothing about Ferrari's, but the 512 seems a good idea to me, but really I am (he is) open to ideas.
Problem I find is the spread is ridiculous on Ferraris, I see for me identical cars (512tr in this example) that vary from 100-150 in asking price.

Are there any decent dealers out there that will find/sell you a good car at the right price or is it shark infested water?

Recognise this tune : da dum da dum da dum etc ?

Target 2 seats with carbs and be prepared to lose half your (sorry your friend's) investment

Most of the cars listed here qualify as they have probably doubled already http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I would talk to someone like Nick Cartwright or Nigel Jeffries

This is obvious and old news. Prices are what they are, the question is what is the best buy today at todays prices. What has been is irrelevant.

Sitting on cash is always gonna be riskier in the long run.

I suppose investment is the wrong term. He is looking for a fun usable classic Ferrari, up to 200k. Disregard investment comments. smile

Collectablity does not change only values

Nearly a Ferrari and high on my list would be an Alfa 8C

Nice car but not what he is looking for. Specifically looking for a classic Ferrari, he has other cars for other uses.

I'll sell him my Scuderia for £200K(ish) - Sounds like just the classic he's looking for ;-)

Still expect 'him' to be along any moment with of course the correct investment decision you friend should take...

Over to you GRBF430F1...

Not quite classic enough smile

Why isn't he searching himself? He wants some help which is good for me, the deal is I find a car and I get to swap cars (930 here) occasionally. smile

To reiterate, investment isn't the first priority, I wish I could change the thread title.

does it have to be RHD? If not,
a LHD 512 BBi should be in budget;
or maybe a 330 GT

[their RHD equivalents might be in budget too, but I don't know as I have not followed prices in the UK closely for these]

Best buy today for a fun and useable Ferrari is probably a 360. Whether they are classic enough is another question. They certainly haven't seen any real price inflation.

I couldn't bring myself to blow £100,000 on a 10,000 mile 328, knowing that I could have bought one for half the money less than 2 years ago.

512 BB would be my choice I think if it were a classic I was after.

512 TR as you say prices appear to be fairly volatile.

when buying a classic rightly or wrongly its the miles and number of owners that effect price as much as condition, and of course if it is original or restored ..... all IMHO of course.

330 GT

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C546788

or maybe a Lamborghini Espada (decent one about £50k) or Countach

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/l...

all 3 should not lose money

550 and 360 are too modern.

What is the going price for a f40 these days? Do they change hands at the advertised 700+ ?

We talked about the 330, but it's not the right car.

Countach is a very good shout!

Isn't yours LHD ? ! I certainly won't be parting company with my RHD for £200k that's for sure. Prices are only going one way with the Scuderia.
May not technically be a classic yet but its going to be for sure

I'd be looking for a De Tomaso Mangusta, proper classic which is also appreciating and looks better then any <200k Ferrari in my opinion. There is a red one in the next Silverstone auction I think.

Edit to add - If the buyer is willing to consider other marques.

I was getting worried for a moment there. Anyway, normal service resumed.
