lets say you have 2 petrol cars, about the same size little hatchback.

One does 0-60 in 15 seconds has 60bhp 70 lbs of torque
The other does it in 9 seconds and has 120bhp and 110lbs of torque

Will it FEEL a lot quicker? Hypothetical situation that ive never been able to compare.

Ive compared diesels to petrols but of course diesels have a st lot more torque so tend to feel faster.

It will feel a lot quicker but more importantly it'll be nicer to drive briskly without having to rev the nuts off it.

hehe

I noticed a big difference going from 10 to 7. 7-6 wasn't too noticeable, similar to 6-5.

From 15 to 9 will be a huge difference.

I've gone from a Ka with 60hp to a Grande Punto T-Jet with 120hp and 155lb-ft of torque. It feels a lot faster than the old Ka and the performance is much easier to access aswell. whereas I used to have to drop 2/3 gears to make quick progress (well as much as possible in a Ka!)I now only drop one, often don't even bother and use the torque to accelerate.

Bear in mind that the Grande is also a good 350kg's heavier aswell.

When I occasionally borrow my brother's 1.2 corsa, it feels pathetically slow compared to my 2.0 petrol mondeo. That's about 80bhp vs 130ish.

You still couldn't call it fast.

I've found that, even though the seat of the pants feeling is notably faster, when you put your foot down and move out to pass something slow like that, if the other guy floors it as well, the rate at which you actually go past him is annoyingly low.

Yes it will feel much quicker, particularly at higher speeds. If for example said hatchback requires 25bhp to maintain 60mph and you want to accelerate from there (Assuming the gearing allows maximum power to be used in both):
  • The one with 60bhp will have 35bhp remaining for acceleration
  • The one with 120bhp with have 95bhp remaining for acceleration
From empirical observation I can say that 60bhp in a small to medium hatch feels very slow whereas 120 is perfectly fast enough.

Difference in power/performances between two petrol cars is generally easier to feel that different between diesels, especially comparing diesel engines that are very similar. Latest 318d compared to 320d for instance: they feel close in daily performance if you don't have the chance to ask for all the power. But the same power difference between two NA petrol cars is more clearly detectable

Nine seconds to sixty is pretty reasonable for everyday use - don't feel too badly done by.

My perception was the opposite to be honest. Something like a 911 turbo doing 0-60 in just under 4 seconds feels absolutely blistering compared to something like an E39 M5 doing it in just over 5 seconds. I'm not sure I could get in to a car blind folded now and tell you whether I just experienced 0-60 in 9 seconds or 16 seconds. I suppose I could count, but that's not feeling, that's measuring.

The fastest feeling car I've been in was a remapped RS6, I'm sure it was down to turbocharged torque as it's not the quickest car I've been in I'm sure. I wonder if's the same with you in the 911 Turbo?

Well it is slow...but will feel faster than 15 seconds.

It's mainly down to how it produces its torque. My 335i is slower than my Z4M was by a bit of a margin (0-60 in 4.8s vs 5.4s) but the 335i feels faster due to the fat mid-range.

I'd guess 9 seconds to 60 is probably about the median point for new cars sold in the UK. It's certainly not slow in any meaningful sense.
