Hey Guys.

Just become the proud owner of a 2006 EP3, loving it. However it's got the stock stereo and the noise from the road is quite loud. This combines to give a less than ideal audio experience. I would like to upgrade the head unit to a DAB radio which uses the existing aerial and also has usb/aux inputs. I am also going to soundproof the doors (seems pretty straightforward). I'm also going to replace the speakers front and rear. Any suggestions/experience installing speakers? which ones fit? Any good DAB head units?

Ideally i don't want to be using additional amplifiers and its not all about the bass! I'm happy with 6music or radio2! So it doesn't have to be mental expensive, just a solid upgrade which together with soundproofing will improve the overall quality.

Thanks chaps

you seem to have the basics covered ie

sound deadening
replace speakers all round
replace HU

with regards to equipment its all about budget, ebay i always find useful for supporting this.

with regards to the fronts have a look for tweeter mounts - these can be commonly found for the EP3 and look eom , arent that expensive and will really help with the sound distribution!

good luck smile

I've done a fair few installs on cars but I am most proud of the one I did on my FN2 Type R. On the FN2 the stock HU and speakers are the biggest pile of steaming donkey poo I've ever heard. Road noise is better than an EP3 though, but still apparent.

My Setup is;
A JVC double din
JL 4 channel amp
JL Components Front
JL Coaxials rear
Fully sound deadened front doors and rear quarters around the speakers.

I did have a JL sub but to be honest the combo of the JL components and deadening provide more than enough bass for me.

What I would say is don't scrimp on the sound deadening, it will massively improve the mid bass whilst keeping out the road noise. Its cheap too. B&Q flashing tape at £20 a roll. The only down side is weight, which in a CTR with low torque is a pain. Another reason I ditched the sub.

  • EDIT ** you really do need an amp. They are not all about bass, for any half decent component speaker a HU 50w PMPO MOSFET chip amp will simply not drive them properly. You do need an amp to give them a good clean signal and a good dose of RMS power. Then you can set the EQ on the HU to do as much or little bass as you like.
