Chain and Sprockets were replaced 10,000 miles ago... Last October in fact ... The chain and front sprocket look like new ...

The rear sprocket is a renthal and the teeth are worn substantially ... I guess that's what I get for using an alum rear sprocket!

Thoughts on replacing the rear sprocket only?

I generally do the lot in one go but I usually get 20-30k from them not 10k!!

just change the rear sprocket then, its no different from using various different sprockets at different tracks.

Its not like the thing ever leaves the garage these days anyway.

What harm do you think is going to come from changing just the sprocket?

I say do it, I wouldn't bat an eyelid personally. You'll no doubt keep a close eye on the condition of it all on a regular basis anyway, you're Mr OCD afterall

It's more to do with chains and sprockets wearing equally together ... So installing a new sprocket or chain into used parts could possibly cause premature wear of the components.

But tbh I've never tried it to know smile

If you were going to change the chain as a precaution surely that's the only other bit that will wear, so no harm at all in bunging another sprocket on?

I'd certainly just replace the sprocket!

Turn it round, you'll get a few more miles from it before you need a new one.

Seriously, no issue with changing a rear sprocket only. Go up a tooth or 2 whilst you're at it.

Change just the rear. Some bikes don't 'like' ally rears - my 916 has had one on for years and it's fine but the Monster's munched through two in 5,000 miles, yet the chain and front sprocket are fine. I've now replaced it with a supersprox 'stealth' sprocket (steel teeth on ally centre) and hopefully that'll last a bit longer.

I've got a brand Supersprox in the garage actually... I took it off and bought the renthal as the Supersprox looked tacky against the wheel colour of the bike.

Steel sprockets tend to wear at a very consistent rate being made of the same stuff throughout.

Ally sprockets can almost last as long, but as soon as you've gone through the hard anodised layer you're munching into soft ally and it's downhill very fast at the end of their lives.

Stick the gash Supersprox thing on, spray it if you're offended by the colour.

If your wheel alignment isn't straight that causes wear on the sprocket.

The chain adjusters are not a perfect measure of wheel alignment

I've checked with a straight edge previously mate and found the chain adjusters relatively accurate.
