Make sure you are not suffering from the very common battery drain problem. The wireless reciever below the rear offside window inside the plastics that support the parcel shelf gets interference from modern wireless electronics and keeps waking the car up every few minutes and draining the battery.
to test, sit in the car when its dark (so you can see light) and keep your eye on the red led next to the park setting on the autobox selector.
Once the car has been turned off, after a couple of minutes the light will go out and it should remain out.
If it comes back in again (wait up to 10 mins) then you are getting interference from something.
official fix is to replace the reciever, but the cheap fix is to removed the aerial wire from the reciever - which solves it in most cases (ive had 3 p38's All with the same problem)

Yup, I think mine was doing that, so I disconnected the blue cable. Still drained.
So I cut the orange signal wire from the RF to the BECM, and fitted a switch.
The LED was still glowing dimly.
So I pressed the mode button on the autobox, and the LED went out.
I agree that you have to be careful when changing battery. I connected a fully charged jumpstart pack to the battery leads before taking the old one off.
My P38 won't see too much use (company car plus a TVR in the garage), so I'm thinking about putting a solar charger on her to keep the battery topped up.
Halfrauds have a 6W one on offer @ £40.
